What is the difference between a narcissus and a daffodil? Both belong to the Narcissus genus: yellow narcissus varieties with large trumpets are often called daffodils, and Tête-à-Tête is a dwarf variety.

💛 Golden-yellow flowers, 2 to 3 per stem • 🌱 Dwarf, 15 to 20 cm • 🪴 Ideal for pots and planters • 🌤️ Flowers from February to April • ⛅ Sun or partial shade • ❄️ Very hardy • 🔁 Flowers again every year • 📏 Size 10/12 bulbs
'Tête-à-Tête' daffodil is the most widely planted dwarf daffodil in Europe: its 15 to 20 cm stems each bear two to three small golden-yellow flowers, hence its name, and open from late winter, when gardens and balconies are still bare. It is a horticultural selection from Europe (United Kingdom), bred in Cornwall from a wild daffodil native to the Iberian Peninsula.
Its small size and sturdy stems, which do not flop in rain or wind, make it one of the flower bulbs best suited to pots, window boxes, and borders. Its size 10/12 bulbs produce well-flowered clumps from the very first year.
Which daffodil should you choose?
- 'Tête-à-Tête' daffodil (this plant) — dwarf, 15 to 20 cm tall, with two to three small flowers per stem from February. For pots, planters, and low borders.
- 'Carlton' daffodil — 40 to 45 cm stems, with one large yellow flower per stem in March-April. For gardens, flower beds, lawns, and bouquets.
- 'Thalia' daffodil — pure white and fragrant, 30 to 35 cm tall, with two to three flowers per stem in April. For elegant flower beds, pots, and bouquets.
Plant all three varieties and they will flower from February to late April: Tête-à-Tête starts the season, Carlton follows in March, and Thalia finishes in April.
How many bulbs should you choose?
Plant Tête-à-Tête bulbs close together to create a carpet of flowers: allow 50 to 70 bulbs per square meter, or 10 to 15 bulbs in a pot 20 to 25 cm in diameter.
- 100 bulbs: about 1.5 m², or 7 to 10 pots and planters on a balcony.
- 200 bulbs: about 3 m², for a continuous border along a path or terrace.
- 400 bulbs: about 6 m², for a yellow carpet beneath trees or across a lawn.
The larger the pack, the lower the price per bulb: the 400-bulb pack costs about 35% less per bulb than the 100-bulb pack.
Planting & placement
Plant the bulbs from September to December, as long as the ground is not frozen, for flowering from February to April, depending on the region.
- Exposure: sun or partial shade; it also flowers beneath a deciduous tree, which lets light through in late winter.
- Depth: 8 to 10 cm, tip pointing up.
- Spacing: 8 to 10 cm between bulbs in the ground; in a pot, they can almost touch.
- Soil type: ordinary and well-drained; it only fears standing water.
- Hardiness: down to -25 °C in the ground, with no protection needed.
For a pot that flowers longer, plant in layers: Tête-à-Tête bulbs on top, at 8 cm, and later-flowering bulbs below, at 15 cm.
Watering & care
In the ground, rain is enough. In a pot, the potting mix should never stay waterlogged or dry out completely during flowering.
- Watering: light — when planting, then in a pot when the potting mix is dry on the surface, especially as the buds emerge.
- Fertilizer: unnecessary in the ground; in a pot, use a bulb fertilizer as the leaves emerge.
- Spent flowers: cut them off once they have faded, so the bulb keeps its energy instead of producing seeds.
- After flowering: let the foliage turn yellow for six weeks before cutting it back; these yellowing leaves are normal here, as they nourish the bulb for next year.
Do not tie or braid the leaves after flowering: they need their full surface exposed to the sun to recharge the bulb.
Decorating ideas & plant pairings
Its yellow flowers brighten late-winter planters and pair well with evergreen balcony plants, as shown in our guide to windowsill plants.
- For a complete winter planter, plant them at the foot of Helleborus 'Christmas Carol' — its white flowers are followed by yellow daffodils from December to April.
- For red and yellow contrast, pair them with Skimmia japonica 'Rubella' — its red buds and evergreen foliage frame the golden yellow flowers.
- For continuous flowering, plant Allium 'Purple Sensation' in the same flower bed—their purple globes take over in May, when the daffodils have faded.
- For a balcony version, plant 10 to 15 bulbs in the white Elho Greenville Round pot in Ø20 cm—the white makes the yellow flowers pop, and the pot's drainage hole prevents standing water.
In a window box, line them up in front of taller plants: their small flowers remain clearly visible from indoors.
Verdeia tips
- Force a few indoors: plant 5 to 7 bulbs in a pot in November, leave it outdoors in the cold for eight weeks, then bring it into a bright, cool room; it will flower in three weeks.
- Give them as a gift in a pot: a pot of daffodils in bud is a much-appreciated late-winter gift, a symbol of renewal, as explained in our plants to give as gifts ideas.
- Divide the clumps every four or five years: when flowers become less abundant, dig up the clumps after the foliage turns yellow, separate the bulbs and replant them right away.
