💛 Large yellow flowers with a trumpet • 🌿 40 to 45 cm stems • 🌤️ Flowers from March to April • 💐 Excellent cut flower • ⛅ Sun or partial shade • ❄️ Very hardy • 🔁 Naturalizes and flowers again every year • 📏 Large 12/14-caliber bulbs
Daffodil 'Carlton' is the large yellow daffodil of gardens and meadows: in March and April, its 40 to 45 cm stems each bear a 10 cm flower, with soft yellow petals around a broad, deeper yellow trumpet and a light vanilla fragrance. It is a horticultural selection from Europe (United Kingdom), developed in Cornwall in the 1920s and still among the most widely planted daffodils.
Hardy, it returns every spring and spreads year after year in the ground, eventually forming large clumps. Among our flower bulbs, this is the choice for a flower bed, border, or flowering lawn, and its large 12/14-caliber bulbs produce large flowers from the very first spring.
Which daffodil should you choose?
- Daffodil 'Carlton' (this plant) — 40 to 45 cm stems, each bearing one large flower in March-April. For gardens, flower beds, lawns, and bouquets.
- Daffodil 'Tête-à-Tête' — dwarf, 15 to 20 cm tall, with two to three small flowers per stem from February. For pots, window boxes, and low borders.
- Daffodil 'Thalia' — pure white and fragrant, 30 to 35 cm tall, with two to three flowers per stem in April. For elegant flower beds, pots, and bouquets.
Planted together, these three varieties bloom from February to late April: Tête-à-Tête opens the season, Carlton follows in March, and Thalia finishes in April.
How many bulbs should you choose?
Daffodils have the greatest impact when planted in generous clumps: allow about 30 bulbs per square meter, or 6 to 8 bulbs in a pot 25 cm in diameter.
- 15 bulbs: about 0.5 m², or two large pots on a terrace.
- 30 bulbs: about 1 m², for a spring flower bed or around the base of a tree.
- 60 bulbs: about 2 m², for a yellow border along a path.
- 120 bulbs: about 4 m², to naturalize a lawn or woodland area.
The larger the set, the lower the price per bulb: the set of 120 costs less than half as much per bulb as the set of 15.
Planting & location
Bulbs are planted from September to December, as long as the soil is not frozen, for flowering in March and April.
- Exposure: sun or partial shade; it blooms very well beneath deciduous trees, still bare in spring.
- Depth: 15 cm, tip facing up, or about three times the height of the bulb.
- Spacing: 10 to 15 cm between bulbs in the ground, 5 cm in a pot.
- Soil type: ordinary and well-drained; it also grows in clay soil, as long as the water does not stagnate.
- Hardiness: down to -25 °C in the ground, with no protection needed, like most cold-hardy plants.
For a natural effect in a lawn, toss a handful of bulbs at random and plant them where they land.
Watering & care
In the ground, autumn and spring rain is enough. In a pot, use well-draining potting soil, as explained in our guide to growing media and potting soils, and never leave it waterlogged.
- Watering: light — when planting, then in a pot when the potting soil is dry on the surface, especially as the buds emerge.
- Fertilizer: unnecessary in the ground; in a pot, use bulb fertilizer when the leaves emerge.
- Spent flowers: cut them off once they have wilted, so the bulb keeps its energy instead of forming seeds.
- After flowering: let the foliage turn yellow for six weeks before cutting it back; these yellowing leaves are normal here, as they feed the bulb for next year.
In a lawn, wait until the leaves have yellowed before the first mow: the daffodils will bloom again in greater numbers the following year.
Decorating ideas & plant pairings
Its bright yellow color heralds spring and pairs well with other bulbs and late-winter plants, as shown in our guide to plants for a balcony in full sun.
- For the classic blue and yellow duo, plant Armenian grape hyacinth at its feet — its blue clusters bloom at the same time, forming a carpet beneath the daffodils.
- For a partial shade spot that blooms from winter onward, pair it with Helleborus 'Christmas Carol' — its white flowers open the season, then the daffodils take over.
- For continuous flowering, plant Allium 'Purple Sensation' in the same bed — its purple globes open in May, when the daffodils have faded.
- For a patio version, plant 6 to 8 bulbs in the Elho Greenville Round foliage-green pot in Ø25 cm — its understated green makes the yellow stand out, and the drainage hole prevents stagnant water.
In a pot, plant in layers: daffodils at the bottom, 15 cm deep, and grape hyacinths above, 7 cm deep, for a yellow and blue pot in March.
Verdeia tips
- Cut them in bud for the vase: pick the stems when the buds begin to show color. They open in the vase and last a week, making a spring bouquet to give, as shown in our ideas for plants to give as gifts.
- Leave them alone for a few hours before adding them to a mixed bouquet: the sap from freshly cut stems makes other flowers wilt. First place them alone in a vase, then combine them with tulips without recutting the stems.
- Divide the clumps every four or five years: when flowers become sparse, dig up the clumps after the foliage has turned yellow, separate the bulbs, and replant them straight away.
