Frequently Asked Questions
Is Dracaena an air-purifying plant? Yes, Dracaena is among the plants known to filter certain indoor air pollutants like formaldehyde and benzene. A valuable benefit for offices and poorly ventilated spaces.
Can you grow a Dracaena in a windowless office? It tolerates low light better than most houseplants, but some natural light is still preferable. Daylight LED artificial lighting can partially compensate. Without any light, growth stops and the foliage gradually loses its variegation.

🍋 Variegated lime yellow and bright green foliage • ✨ Bright fluorescent yellow central stripe • 🌳 Tree-like form in tiered rosettes • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 🩴 4 sizes available • 📏 from H40 cm | Pot Ø17 cm to H120 cm | Pot Ø27 cm
The Dracaena 'Lemon Lime', also called Variegated Dragon Tree, displays long ribboned leaves variegated in deep green, lime green, and bright yellow central stripes that instantly brighten the room. A horticultural cultivar derived from Dracaena fragrans, the parent species native to the tropical forests of East Africa, this bright variety is among the most colorful and easiest to care for Dragon Trees in the catalog.
Its uniqueness compared to other Dracaenas: an exceptional fluorescent yellow variegation running from the petiole to the tip, creating a ray of light effect in the middle of the foliage. Its growth in tiered rosettes on woody stems gives a spectacular miniature tree silhouette from the H100 cm size. Available in four sizes to fit the floor or a low piece of furniture.
Which Dracaena variety to choose?
The Dracaena genus includes dragon trees with very varied shapes and colors — here are the main varieties in the catalog:
- Dracaena 'Lemon Lime' (this plant) — variegated foliage in green and fluorescent lime yellow, tree-like form in tiered rosettes (4 sizes: H40 cm | Pot Ø17 cm to H120 cm | Pot Ø27 cm). The brightest and most colorful version.
- Dracaena 'Janet Lind' — solid deep green ribboned foliage, classic tree-like form. The most understated and timeless version.
- Dracaena 'Compacta' — dense deep green foliage in fluffy pom-poms (H80 cm | Pot Ø24 cm). The most compact and graphic version.
- Dracaena fragrans 'Anita' — fine, supple deep green leaves, slender form (H100 cm | Pot Ø24 cm). The finest and most slender version.
- Dracaena marginata (Madagascar Dragon Tree) — narrow, threadlike green leaves edged in red on twisted stems. The most sculptural and airy version.
- Dracaena marginata 'Magenta' — narrow leaves of a spectacular deep purple. The most colorful and bold version.
- Dracaena surculosa (Gold Dust Dragon Tree) — medium oval deep green leaves speckled with golden yellow, bushy habit. The most compact and original version.
Exposure & location
Dracaena 'Lemon Lime' requires bright indirect light to maintain the intensity of its fluorescent variegation. Too little light turns the lime yellow shade into a duller green. Avoid prolonged direct sun which fades and burns leaf tips.
- Exposure: bright indirect light — sheer curtain window facing east or west, or 1 to 2 meters from a south-facing bay window with a filtering curtain.
- Location: living room, office, bright entrance, bedroom — away from radiators and drafts.
- Temperature: 18 to 27 °C — minimum 15 °C in winter, dislikes sudden changes.
- Soil type: light, rich, and well-draining — universal potting soil for green plants mixed with perlite or coconut fiber.
The more generous the light received (without direct sun), the more vibrant the lime yellow variegation of the new leaves will be — this is the main condition to maintain the bright character of the variety.
Watering & maintenance
Dracaena likes a slightly moist substrate during growth but cannot tolerate water stagnation at the base. Overwatering is among the most common mistakes with this species: always let the surface dry between waterings.
- Watering: moderate — let the surface of the substrate dry out 2 to 3 cm between waterings, about every 7 to 10 days in spring and summer, more spaced in winter.
- Water: prefer non-calcareous, filtered or rested water — Dracaena is sensitive to fluoride and lime which cause browning of leaf tips.
- Drainage: essential — pot with holes, clay pellets at the bottom, saucer always emptied.
- Humidity: tolerates dry air but appreciates occasional misting, especially in winter during heating.
- Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for green plants diluted by half, once a month from March to September only.
- Repotting: every 2 to 3 years in spring into a slightly larger pot — the Dracaena likes to feel a bit cramped.
Dust the leaves with a soft damp cloth once a month — the thin layer of dust dulls the brightness of the yellow variegation and reduces photosynthesis.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
With its neon yellow variegated foliage, the Dracaena 'Lemon Lime' instantly adds a sunny note to any composition. To create a relaxing green corner, it interacts with other tropical plants with dark or colorful foliage.
- For a contrasting Dracaena duo, pair it with a Dracaena marginata 'Magenta' with deep purple foliage — the bright lime yellow of the 'Lemon Lime' and the dark purple of the 'Magenta' create a theatrical, highly graphic chromatic contrast.
- For a colorful tropical trio, surround it with a Philodendron 'Imperial Red' with deep red foliage and a Calathea Makoyana with stained-glass patterns — three vivid palettes (yellow, red, graphic green) composing a joyful and bright jungle.
- To structure vertically, add a Strelitzia Nicolai with large paddle-shaped leaves — the slender tree-like form of the Strelitzia interacts with the tiered rosettes of the Dracaena in a vertical tropical composition.
- To enhance the bright tones, slip it into a matte Elho Brussels Anthracite decorative pot — the deep anthracite highlights the neon yellow variegation like a spotlight and creates a contemporary atmosphere.
The large H100 and H120 cm sizes work as a floor centerpiece near a sofa; the H40 and H65 cm sizes find their place on a console, bookshelf, or desk corner.
Verdeia tips
- Use non-calcareous water: Dracaenas are particularly sensitive to fluoride and lime found in tap water. Prefer filtered, rain, or simply settled water for 24 hours to avoid the characteristic browning of leaf tips.
- Neatly remove yellowed leaves: it is normal for lower leaves to yellow with age. Cut them at the base of the petiole flush with the stem using a clean knife — this preserves the tiered rosette silhouette characteristic of the dragon tree.
- Rejuvenate an overgrown plant: if your Dracaena becomes too tall or bare at the bottom, cut the main stem at the desired height. New rosettes will appear below the cut within a few weeks, and you can even propagate the cut top in water.
