The Hibiscus syriacus 'Hamabo', also known as pale pink Rose of Sharon, tree mallow or Rose of Sharon, produces large, luminous pale pink, wide-open flowers with a spectacular deep purple center all summer long. Native to East Asia, this hardy deciduous shrub is one of the most generously flowering balcony plants in the catalogue.
Its distinctive feature is an exceptionally long summer flowering period from June to September, during which the flowers continuously renew themselves, combined with remarkable hardiness down to -25 °C, allowing it to withstand even the harshest winters in a pot or in the ground. The vivid purple center of each pale pink flower is the 'Hamabo' cultivar's signature feature.
Light & placement
Hibiscus 'Hamabo' needs full sun to produce abundant flowers. It tolerates light partial shade, but flowering will be sparser. It handles wind, summer heat and moderate sea spray very well.
- Light: ideally full sun; bright partial shade is acceptable — at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day for optimal flowering.
- Placement: balcony, terrace, planter, or planted in the ground — tolerates exposed, windy and hot locations.
- Hardiness: very hardy down to -25 °C — withstands the harshest winters, even in an unprotected pot.

Watering & care
Hibiscus 'Hamabo' appreciates fresh soil during flowering but tolerates drought well once established. In a pot, closer attention is needed than in the ground because the substrate dries out faster. To adjust your watering, test the substrate moisture with your finger before each watering.
- Watering: regular in summer to support flowering; 2 to 3 times a week in a pot during hot weather, every 10 days in the shoulder seasons, and almost none in winter.
- Drainage: essential — use a pot with drainage holes, add clay pebbles at the bottom, and always empty the saucer after watering.
- Fertiliser: use a liquid fertiliser for flowering plants that is rich in potassium, once every 2 to 3 weeks from April to September to support summer flowering.
- Pruning: prune hard at the end of winter (February–March) to stimulate flowering for the year — flowers develop on new wood, so generous pruning is beneficial.
- Overwintering: no special care is needed — the plant naturally loses its leaves in autumn and regrows in spring. In a pot, protect the root ball from severe frost with mulch or fleece.
- Repotting: every 2 to 3 years in spring, using a slightly larger pot and taking the opportunity to refresh the substrate.
Leaf drop in autumn is perfectly normal — Hibiscus syriacus is a deciduous shrub that produces fresh foliage again the following spring.

- Support flowering with a potassium-rich fertiliser: from April to September, apply a liquid fertiliser for flowering plants every 2 to 3 weeks. Potassium encourages flower bud formation and intensifies the colour of the blooms.
- Wait before spring bud break: Hibiscus syriacus starts growing again very late in spring, often in April or even May. Do not assume it is dead if the branches remain bare while other shrubs are already turning green — it simply has a naturally late bud break.
