Frequently Asked Questions
Why do the tips of a Dracaena's leaves turn brown? It's almost always related to tap water that is too hard or fluoridated — use filtered water or water left to sit for 24 hours before watering.
How often should you water a Dracaena Bicolor in an apartment? About once every two weeks in spring and summer, letting the soil dry out deeply between waterings — it’s one of the most forgiving plants when you forget to water.

🌿 Green and white bicolor foliage • 🌑 Tolerates low light • 💧 Very little watering • ✨ Very easy to care for • 🏙️ 3 sizes available
The Dracaena Bicolor, also known as the two-colored dragon tree, is a striking, bright indoor plant with long, arching leaves striped white and green. Its variegated foliage brings a touch of freshness and brightness even to the darkest rooms - a rare quality among large structural plants.
Native to the tropical regions of Africa, it belongs to the Dracaena family, known for its exceptional resilience and tolerance of difficult conditions. Its ability to thrive far from windows makes it one of the standout plants in our selection for low-light spaces.
Which Dracaena variety should you choose?
The Dracaena genus offers a wide variety of foliage and silhouettes. Here's how Bicolor compares within the range:
- Dracaena Bicolor (this plant) - long, arching leaves striped green and white, slender form. The brightest in dark spaces.
- Dracaena Marginata - slender leaves with red edges, a highly graphic and airy form. The most iconic.
- Dracaena Lemon Lime - variegated green and lemon-yellow foliage. The brightest and most colorful.
- Dracaena Magenta - spectacular purple and green foliage. The most colorful and contrasting.
- Dracaena Janet Lind - uniform, glossy dark green foliage, H70 cm. The most classic in solid green.
- Dracaena Compacta - compact, branched form, dense foliage, H100 cm. The bushiest.
- Dracaena Anita - large dark green leaves, imposing form, H100 cm. The most majestic.
Bicolor is the only Dracaena to combine green and white stripes with low-light tolerance - ideal for brightening a hallway or windowless office.
Display & placement
Dracaena Bicolor is one of the few large structural plants capable of thriving in a very low-light room. Unlike many other Dracaenas, its variegated foliage retains its white stripes even in shade conditions. Every room offers different conditions: some plants adapt better to each room.
- Ideal light: low to indirect light — hallway, office, or room away from windows.
- Tolerates: partial shade, dry air, and temperature fluctuations.
- Avoid: direct sun, which burns and discolours the foliage, and excessive hard water.
- Temperature: 15–25 °C — one of the most tolerant in the range when it comes to temperature fluctuations.
- Substrate: light and well-draining — universal potting soil with perlite.
Every plant is unique: the intensity of the white stripes and the density of the foliage naturally vary according to light levels and season.
Watering & care
Dracaena Bicolor is one of the most forgiving plants when watering is forgotten — excess water, never lack of water, is the leading cause of death. Always check using the finger method: the substrate must be thoroughly dry before watering.
- Watering: very little — let the substrate dry out thoroughly between waterings.
- Frequency: approximately once every 2 weeks in spring and summer; reduce further in winter.
- Water: room-temperature water, preferably low in limescale — Dracaena is sensitive to fluoride.
- Drainage: essential — a pot with drainage holes is mandatory, and the saucer should be emptied after watering.
- Fertiliser: dilute liquid fertiliser for green plants, every 6 to 8 weeks in spring and summer.
Every plant is unique: watering frequency naturally varies according to pot size, room temperature, and season.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
With its long, arching bicoloured leaves, Dracaena Bicolor brings verticality and brightness to places where most plants struggle to survive. In a low-light space, it pairs well with other easy-care plants for urban apartments.
- For a shade arrangement: pair it with a Sansevieria and a Zamioculcas for a highly adaptable structural trio — three plants that thrive together in an office or hallway without direct light.
- As a centrepiece in an entrance or hallway: the H115 cm size fills a corner with authority — place it in a black Jorck basket for a striking graphic contrast between the white foliage and the woven black.
- Contrast of textures: pair it with a Philodendron with broad, deep green leaves — the Bicolor's fine, luminous stripes stand out particularly well against solid, dark foliage.
- Decorative pot and colour scheme: the green and white foliage naturally pairs with a white Brussels decorative pot — a refined monochrome arrangement that amplifies the luminous effect of the stripes without making it look heavy.
Verdeia tips
- Dust the leaves regularly: the long, arching leaves accumulate dust that blocks the stomata and dulls the white stripes — a damp cloth every 3 to 4 weeks is enough to keep them shining.
- Remove the yellowing lower leaves: this is a natural process of shedding the oldest leaves — gently remove them at the base to maintain a neat appearance and an airy silhouette.
- Use l'eau that is low in limescale if possible: Dracaena is particularly sensitive to fluoride and limescale, which cause brown spots on the tips of the leaves — filtered water or water left to stand for 24 hours solves this problem.
