🌿 Glossy dark green leaves • 🌴 Three staggered trunks • 🌑 Tolerates low light • 💧 Moderate watering • 🌡️ 16-24 °C • 📏 H95 cm | Pot Ø21 cm
The Dracaena fragrans 'Janet Craig', or Dragon Tree, forms rosettes of long, lance-shaped dark green leaves, smooth and glossy, at the top of three trunks of different heights. The species is native to the tropical regions of Africa.
Delivered at 95 cm tall in a 21 cm pot, it stands directly on the floor and already has a real tree silhouette. It is one of the dragon trees that cope best with low light: it belongs among our low-light plants, in an entryway, a hallway or an office away from the window.
Which Dracaena should you choose?
Dragon trees differ mainly in their foliage: broad or narrow, green or variegated. Here is where the Janet Craig fits:
- Dracaena fragrans 'Janet Craig' (this plant) — long glossy dark green leaves, without variegation, on three staggered trunks, H95 cm | Pot Ø21 cm. The choice for a large green plant in a dimly lit room.
- Dracaena 'Janet Lind' — same species, glossy dark green foliage in rosettes, in H70 or H130 cm. The choice for matching the height to the room.
- Dracaena fragrans 'Golden Coast' — same species, wavy leaves edged in golden yellow. The choice for brighter foliage.
- Dracaena 'Lemon Lime' — bright green leaves striped with lime-yellow bands. The choice for vivid variegation.
- Dracaena 'Sunray' — long, narrow light green leaves with a wide yellow margin. The choice for a soft, bright green.
- Dracaena 'Compacta' — dense rosettes of lustrous dark green leaves on several trunks. The choice for tighter foliage.
- Dracaena marginata — fine, ribbon-like green and burgundy leaves. The choice for a light, slender silhouette.
- Dracaena marginata 'Magenta' — long, tapering dark green and burgundy leaves. The choice for more colour.
- Dracaena 'Bicolor' — striped foliage on a slender habit. The choice for a graphic effect.
- Dracaena surculosa — deep green leaves speckled with gold on thin stems. The choice for an airy volume.
All varieties and sizes are gathered in the Dracaena collection.
Light & placement
The Dracaena Janet Craig grows faster in bright indirect light, but it tolerates a dimly lit room, where it keeps dense, dark foliage.
- Light requirements: indirect light, from bright to low; it suits dark rooms and dim entryways and hallways.
- Location: on the floor, in a living room, bedroom, entryway or office, away from radiators and cold draughts.
- Temperature: 16 to 24 °C, never below 10 °C.
- Humidity: the air of a home suits it; mist the foliage from time to time when the heating is on.
Keep it out of direct sun behind a window, which marks the leaves with dry spots. Its ideal spot also depends on the balance between light and humidity.
Watering & care
Let the top few centimetres of compost dry out between waterings, then water less in winter. The dragon tree is sensitive to the fluoride and chlorine in tap water, a common cause of brown leaf tips and edges.
- Frequency: about once a week in spring and summer, every 10 to 15 days in winter.
- Water quality: rainwater, filtered water or tap water left to stand overnight.
- Drainage: a pot with drainage holes, and never standing water at the bottom of the decorative pot.
- Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for green plants every 2 to 3 weeks, from April to September.
- Cleaning: wiping the leaves with a damp cloth removes dust and brings back their shine.
- Repotting: in spring, when the roots fill the pot, in fresh compost for green plants.
Lower leaves turning yellow one by one are part of normal growth: remove them at the base. Good watering is guided by how dry the compost is rather than by the calendar.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
Its three staggered trunks and dark foliage add volume in height without taking up much floor space.
- In a living room corner: at 95 cm, it fills an empty corner and links the floor to the furniture, like other large plants.
- In an arrangement: pair it with Zamioculcas — its lacquered dark green leaflets on upright stems handle the same low light and echo the shine of the leaves.
- For an indoor jungle: place it at the back, behind lower plants; it gives height to an indoor jungle.
- Ideal pot: slip it into the Elho B.for Soft Anthracite decorative pot in Ø22 cm — the matt anthracite sets off the glossy dark green.
In the office, it is one of the plants for professional offices that cope with a desk far from the windows.
Verdeia tips
- Turn the pot a quarter turn every two weeks: the rosettes turn towards the light, and regular rotation keeps a balanced silhouette.
- Dust the leaves once a month: under a layer of dust, they lose their shine and capture less light, which matters in a dimly lit room.
- Let it settle in when it arrives: choose its permanent spot straight away, then follow a few simple steps to welcome a new plant.
