The Allium 'Purple Rain' is a hybrid allium that bears large semi-open globes, up to 15 cm across, made of grape-purple starry flowers. In May and June, they open at the top of straight stems 90 cm to 1 m tall and give off a light scent. It is a European horticultural selection, supplied as graded size 10/12 bulbs that flower from the very first spring.
Its well-spaced starry flowers form airy globes that let the light through and attract bees and bumblebees. Among our flower bulbs, it is the allium with the largest purple globes, to plant in groups above perennials.
How many bulbs should you choose?
Allium 'Purple Rain' is planted in groups so that its large globes form a purple cloud: allow about 20 bulbs per square meter, or 5 bulbs in a pot 25 cm in diameter.
- 40 bulbs: about 2 m², to dot through a perennial bed, or two large 80 cm planters on a terrace.
- 80 bulbs: about 4 m², for an edging along a path.
- 160 bulbs: about 8 m², for a large border or the foot of a hedge.
- 320 bulbs: about 16 m², to naturalize a meadow or bring rhythm to a whole garden.
The larger the pack, the lower the price per bulb: the 320-bulb pack costs almost half as much per bulb as the 40-bulb pack.
Planting & location
The bulbs are planted from September to December, as long as the ground is not frozen, for flowers in May and June.
- Exposure: full sun, at least 6 hours a day; in shade, the stems stretch and lean.
- Depth: 15 cm, tip upwards, roughly four times the height of the bulb.
- Spacing: 20 cm between bulbs, in groups of 5 to 7 for a bouquet effect.
- Soil type: well drained, even poor or chalky; the bulb rots in soil that stays waterlogged in winter.
- Hardiness: down to -25 °C in the ground, no protection needed.
Planted deep enough, the bulbs anchor the tall stems firmly, so they stand straight without staking despite the weight of the globes.
Watering & care
Alliums live on their reserves and make do with rainfall in the ground.
- Watering: low — water once at planting, then only if the spring is very dry; in pots, when the potting mix is dry several centimeters down, which you can confirm with the finger test.
- In a pot: a well-draining potting mix lightened with a third of sand or fine gravel, with a layer of clay pebbles at the bottom.
- Fertilizer: a bulb fertilizer in spring, when the leaves emerge.
- After flowering: let the leaves turn yellow and dry in place; they rebuild the bulb's reserves for the following year.
Allium leaves turn yellow as soon as it flowers: plant it behind perennials or grasses that will hide the base.
Decorating ideas & plant pairings
Its large purple globes float above perennials, in borders as well as in large pots on a sunny terrace, following the pointers in our guide to plants for a sunny balcony.
- To bring the family together, plant it with its two parents, Allium 'Purple Sensation' and the Star of Persia — three sizes of purple globes that flower together in May-June.
- For a purple and white contrast, add a few Allium 'Mount Everest' — their white globes open at the same time, slightly higher up.
- To extend the allium season, plant Allium 'Ping Pong' alongside — its white globes take over in July.
- To hide the foliage, place low summer-flowering perennials or grasses in front — they mask the yellowing leaves while the globes stay in full view.
For a terrace version, plant 5 bulbs in the Elho Greenville Round pot in foliage green, Ø25 cm: its green carries on from the stems and brings out the purple of the globes.
Verdeia tips
- Cut them for your bouquets: picked when half the flowers in the globe are open, the stems last about two weeks in a vase; change the water every two days to avoid the garlic smell.
- Keep the dried globes: after flowering they turn beige and stay decorative all summer in the garden or in a dried bouquet.
- Leave them in place: don't dig up the bulbs, they overwinter in the ground like the species in our selection of cold-hardy plants, and flower again every spring.
