🌷 3 to 5 flowers per bulb • 🎨 Mix of bright colors • 🌱 Compact, 20–30 cm • 🌤️ Early flowering in March and April • 🔁 Comes back every year • ☀️ Full sun • ❄️ Fully hardy • 📏 Bulb size 8/9
The Praestans tulip is a multi-flowered species tulip: instead of a single bloom, each bulb sends up a branched stem carrying 3 to 5 cup-shaped flowers in March and April, 20–30 cm tall. This mix brings together vivid reds, oranges and softer shades. The species, Tulipa praestans, is native to the mountains of Central Asia (Tajikistan), where it grows on sunny, rocky slopes.
Closer to the wild plant than the big garden tulips, it reliably comes back every spring in well-drained soil. Among our flower bulbs, it is the tulip that gives the most flowers per bulb, ideal in pots, along edges or in rockeries.
Which tulip should you choose?
- Tulipa praestans (this plant) — species tulip, 20–30 cm, 3 to 5 flowers per bulb in March and April. For pots, rockeries and a garden that flowers again on its own.
- Mixed Darwin tulips — large flowers in bright colors, 50–60 cm, in April and May. For a colorful border and bouquets.
- Black Triumph tulip and White Triumph tulip — a single color, 40–50 cm, in April. For striking, elegant combinations.
- Mixed double tulips — full, peony-like flowers, 40–50 cm, in April and May. For a romantic border and generous bouquets.
Tulipa praestans flowers two to three weeks before the big tulips: planted in the same border, they stretch the tulip season from March to May.
How many bulbs do you need?
With several flowers per bulb, it makes an impact even in small numbers: allow about 40 bulbs per square meter, or 8 to 10 bulbs in a 25 cm pot.
- 25 bulbs: two to three pots on a balcony, or about 0.5 m² in the ground — up to around a hundred flowers.
- 50 bulbs: about 1 m², for a colorful edging or a rockery.
- 100 bulbs: about 2 m², for a spring border that comes back every year.
- 200 bulbs: about 4 to 5 m², to naturalize a bank or a large sunny bed.
The bigger the pack, the lower the price per bulb: the 200-bulb pack works out at less than half the price per bulb of the 25-bulb pack.
Planting & position
Plant the bulbs from September to December, as long as the ground is not frozen, for flowers in March and April.
- Position: full sun; it is the summer heat on the dormant bulb that allows it to flower again.
- Depth: 10–12 cm, pointed end up.
- Spacing: 10 cm between bulbs in the ground, 3 to 5 cm in pots.
- Soil: well drained, even poor or stony; the bulb rots in soil that stays damp in summer.
- Hardiness: down to -25 °C in the ground, no protection needed, like most cold-hardy plants.
Plant it where you don't water in summer (rockery, foot of a wall, dry edge): that's the secret to having it flower again for several years.
Watering & care
In the ground, rain is enough. In pots, use a free-draining compost lightened with sand or clay pebbles, as explained in our guide to substrates and composts.
- Watering: low — at planting, then in pots when the compost is dry on the surface, until flowering ends; none at all in summer.
- Feeding: not needed in the ground; in pots, a bulb fertilizer as the leaves appear.
- Faded flowers: cut the flowers off below the head once they wither, leaving the stems and leaves.
- After flowering: let the foliage turn yellow where it is for six weeks; it recharges the bulb for the following year.
Don't lift the bulbs: left in place and kept dry over summer, they flower again and gradually form fuller clumps.
Styling ideas & plant pairings
Its bright, naturally bunched flowers liven up balconies and rockeries from the end of winter, as shown in our guide to choosing plants for your balcony.
- For a blue carpet at its feet, plant Armenian grape hyacinths with it — their blue spikes flower at the same time and set off the reds and oranges.
- For flowers from February, add large-flowered crocuses — they open the season, then the tulips take over in March.
- For a yellow and red duo, pair it with Narcissus 'Tête-à-Tête' — the same small size, perfect in window boxes or low edgings.
- For a balcony version, plant 8 to 10 bulbs in the Elho Greenville Round pot in leaf green in the Ø25 cm size — the green sets off the bright colors, and the drainage hole prevents standing water.
In a pot, plant in layers: tulips at the bottom at 12 cm, grape hyacinths or crocuses above at 7 cm, for a pot in flower from February to April.
Verdeia tips
- Plant as soon as they arrive: species tulip bulbs are smaller and dry out faster. Get them into the ground within a few days, as with any new plant arriving at home.
- Keep them dry in summer: in pots, move the container out of the rain once the foliage has yellowed, then put it back outside in autumn. The bulbs will flower again in spring.
- Cut one stem for a mini bouquet: a single branched stem carries several flowers, enough for a little spring bouquet in a glass or small vase.

Orders ship within 48 working hours, with tracked delivery in 2 to 5 working days via DPD. Shipping costs and the free-shipping threshold depend on your country — see our delivery page. You receive a tracking link as soon as your parcel leaves.
What should I do when my plant arrives?
