🖤 Black-purple and creamy white fringed flowers • ✨ Petals edged with a crystal fringe • 🌿 Sturdy 40 to 50 cm stems • 🌤️ Flowers from April to May • 💐 Superb in bouquets • ☀️ Full sun • ❄️ Very hardy • 📏 Bulbs size 11/12
The 'Breakdance' tulip brings together two fringed tulips in striking contrast: one a deep black-purple with plum highlights, the other a luminous creamy white. The edges of their petals are cut into fine teeth, like a crystal fringe, giving the flowers a frosted look. From April to May, they open on straight 40 to 50 cm stems. It is a horticultural selection from Europe (the Netherlands), from the Fringed tulip group.
In beds, large pots or bouquets, the black and white duo creates a graphic effect that stands out from afar. Among our flower bulbs, it is the only tulip with fringed petals, the one for contemporary beds and unusual vases.
Which tulip should you choose?
- 'Breakdance' tulip (this plant) — black-purple and creamy white fringed flowers, 40 to 50 cm, April to May. For graphic contrast and unusual bouquets.
- Black Triumph Tulip — smooth cup-shaped flowers in dark, almost black purple, 40 to 50 cm, in April. For a dark, satiny bed.
- White Triumph Tulip — smooth cup-shaped flowers in pure white, 40 to 50 cm, in April. For a bright, classic bed.
Planted next to the black and white Triumph tulips, the fringed flowers add texture: the same colours, but two different silhouettes.
How many bulbs should you choose?
Tulips make the most impact planted in tight groups: allow about 40 bulbs per square metre, or 10 to 12 bulbs in a 30 cm diameter pot.
- 15 bulbs: one large pot on a balcony or terrace, or a group of about 0.4 m² in a bed.
- 30 bulbs: about 0.75 m², or two to three large pots.
- 60 bulbs: about 1.5 m², for a black and white bed or a border along a path.
- 120 bulbs: about 3 m², for a large border or a cutting patch of tulips.
The bigger the pack, the lower the price per bulb: the 120-bulb pack works out at less than half the price per bulb of the 15-bulb pack.
Planting & location
Tulips are planted from October to December, once the soil has cooled, for flowers from April to May.
- Position: full sun; low-angled light makes the fringes sparkle and reveals the plum highlights of the dark flowers.
- Depth: 15 cm, pointed end up.
- Spacing: 10 cm between bulbs in the ground, 3 to 5 cm in pots.
- Soil: well drained; add sand to heavy soil, as the bulb rots in waterlogged ground.
- Hardiness: down to -25 °C in the ground, no protection needed.
Mix the two colours when planting rather than grouping them by shade: a black and white chequerboard looks more lively.
Watering & care
In the ground, rain is enough. In pots, check the moisture with the finger test and water only when the compost is dry 2 cm down.
- Watering: low — at planting, then in pots when the compost is dry on the surface, especially while the buds are forming.
- Fertilizer: unnecessary in the ground; in pots, use a bulb fertilizer as the leaves emerge.
- Faded flowers: cut the flower off just below the head as soon as it drops its petals, leaving the stem and leaves.
- After flowering: let the foliage turn yellow where it is for six weeks; it rebuilds the bulb’s reserves.
The fringes hold raindrops: in pots, move them under an awning during heavy showers to keep the flowers neat.
Decorating ideas & plant pairings
Their black and white contrast gives structure to a bed or a sunny balcony, as our guide to plants for a sunny balcony shows.
- For a white carpet at their feet, plant Muscari 'White Magic' — its ivory-white 10 to 15 cm spikes flower in March-April and carry the white down to ground level.
- To extend the dark tones, pair them with Allium 'Purple Rain' — its large grape-purple globes, on 90 cm to 1 m stems, take over in May-June.
- To end the season in white, plant Allium 'Mount Everest' behind them — its 10 to 12 cm white globes, on 1 m to 1.20 m stems, open in May-June above the tulip foliage.
- For a balcony version, plant 10 to 12 bulbs in a 30 cm pot, with muscari above them, following our method for planting bulbs in pots in autumn — a pot in flower from March to May on a sunny balcony or terrace.
In a vase, mix one black stem for every two white ones: the bouquet stays bright and the dark flowers stand out even more.
Verdeia tips
- Wait for the soil to cool: ideally plant from late October. In soil that is still warm, tulip bulbs are more prone to disease.
- Cut them in bud for the vase: pick them in the morning, when the bud is coloured but still closed; they then last a week in a vase and make a very unusual bouquet among plants to give as gifts.
- Add a few bulbs every autumn: fringed tulips flower again, but their blooms get smaller over the years. A few new bulbs each year keep a bed well filled.

FAQ – Everything to know before adopting your Verdeia plant
How are my plants prepared before shipping?
All our plants are selected from our European partner nurseries. Before shipping, they are watered, cleaned, and protected with breathable, secure packaging. Each package is designed to ensure your plant arrives in perfect health, without any transport-related stress.
Will the plant look exactly like the photo?
The photos accurately represent the variety and the stated size. Since each plant is unique, slight differences in shape, foliage, or color may occur — and that’s part of their charm.
What are the delivery times and conditions?
Orders ship within 48 working hours, with tracked delivery in 2 to 5 working days via DPD. Shipping costs and the free-shipping threshold depend on your country — see our delivery page. You receive a tracking link as soon as your parcel leaves.
What should I do when my plant arrives?
Open your package as soon as you receive it and carefully remove the plant from its packaging. Let it acclimate for 24 hours in its new environment before watering. If it has been slightly stressed during transport, it will recover its shape after one or two days in the light.
What should I do if my plant arrives damaged?
Contact us within 48 hours with a photo of the issue. Our team will assess the situation and offer you the best solution: replacement, partial refund, or recovery advice.
Can I return a plant?
Since plants are living beings, standard returns are not possible. However, we guarantee good health upon delivery: if the plant arrives damaged, it will be replaced free of charge. For any other cases (order error, decorative pot, accessory), returns are possible within 14 days.
