🖤 Deep purple flowers, almost black • ✨ Satin-finish petals • 🌿 Sturdy stems 40 to 50 cm tall • 🌤️ Blooms in April • 💐 Beautiful in a bouquet • ☀️ Full sun • ❄️ Very hardy • 📏 Bulb size 11/12
The Black Triumph tulip is one of the garden’s most striking tulips: in April, its cup-shaped flowers, so deep purple they look black, open on upright stems 40 to 50 cm tall, with satin-finish petals that take on plum tones in the sun. It is a European horticultural selection (the Netherlands) from the Triumph tulip group, known for its sturdy stems and long-lasting blooms.
Planted alone in a large pot or mixed with white or pink flowers, it adds a sought-after dark, elegant touch. Among our flower bulbs, it’s the tulip for contemporary flower beds and refined bouquets.
Which tulip should you choose?
- Black Triumph tulip (this plant) — a single colour, almost-black purple, 40 to 50 cm tall, blooming in April. For a graphic look and elegant pairings.
- Darwin tulips mix — red, yellow, pink and orange, 50 to 60 cm tall, with large flowers up to 10 cm across in April-May. For a colourful, cheerful flower bed.
They both bloom at the same time: a few black tulips among the Darwin mix bring out all the colours.
How many bulbs should you choose?
Tulips make the biggest impact when planted in tight groups: allow about 40 bulbs per square metre, or 10 to 12 bulbs in a pot with a diameter of 30 cm.
- 12 bulbs: a large pot on a terrace, or a small group in a flower bed.
- 24 bulbs: two large pots, or about 0.5 m² in the ground.
- 48 bulbs: about 1 m², for a dark and elegant flower bed.
- 96 bulbs: about 2 m², for a spectacular border or tulips to cut throughout April.
The larger the lot, the lower the price per bulb: the 96-bulb lot costs less than half as much per bulb as the 12-bulb lot.
Planting & placement
Tulips are planted from October to December, when the soil has cooled, for blooms in April.
- Exposure: full sun; the light makes the satin sheen of the petals glow and reveals their plum-colored highlights.
- Depth: 15 cm, pointed end up.
- Spacing: 10 cm between bulbs in the ground, 3 to 5 cm in pots.
- Soil type: well-drained; add sand to heavy soil, as the bulb rots in waterlogged soil.
- Hardiness: down to -25 °C in the ground, with no protection needed.
Plant it in front of a light-colored backdrop (a white wall, silver foliage, or golden grasses): its dark color stands out much better than beside a dark hedge.
Watering & care
In the ground, rain is enough. In pots, use a well-draining potting mix, as explained in our guide to growing media and potting mixes, and water when it is dry on the surface.
- Watering: sparingly — when planting, then in pots when the potting mix is dry on the surface, especially as the buds form.
- Fertilizer: unnecessary in the ground; in pots, use bulb fertilizer as the leaves emerge.
- Spent flowers: cut the flower below the head as soon as it loses its petals, leaving the stem and leaves.
- After flowering: leave the foliage in place to yellow for six weeks; it replenishes the bulb’s reserves.
In pots, bulbs become depleted more quickly: replant them in the garden after flowering and put fresh bulbs in the pot in autumn.
Decorating ideas & plant pairings
Its dark color pairs well with white, pink, and purple, in flower beds and on a sunny balcony, as shown in our guide to plants for sunny balconies.
- For a black-and-white contrast, plant it with ‘Thalia’ daffodil — they bloom together in April, and the pure white brings out the depth of the purple.
- For a carpet at its feet, add Armenian grape hyacinth — its vivid blue clusters brighten the base of the tulips.
- To extend the display in purple tones, pair it with Allium 'Purple Sensation' — its purple globes take over in May.
- For a patio version, plant 10 to 12 bulbs in the white Elho Greenville Round pot in Ø30 cm — the white highlights the almost-black color of the flowers.
In a pot, plant in layers: tulips at the bottom at 15 cm deep, muscari above at 7 cm, for a blue then black pot from March to late April.
Verdeia tips
- Wait until the soil cools: Ideally, plant from late October onward. In still-warm soil, tulip bulbs are more susceptible to disease.
- Cut them while still in bud for the vase: Pick tulips in the morning, when the bud has taken on color but is still closed. With white or pink flowers, they make a very chic bouquet, as shown in our ideas for plants to give as gifts.
- Add a few bulbs each fall: Tulips flower again, but their flowers get smaller over the years. A few new bulbs each year keep the flower bed full.
