🌷 Large cup-shaped flowers up to 10 cm • 🎨 Mix of bright colors • 🌿 Sturdy stems 50 to 60 cm tall • 💐 Ideal for bouquets • ☀️ Full sun • ❄️ Very hardy • 📏 Bulbs size 11/12
Darwin hybrid tulips are the tallest garden tulips: on straight stems 50 to 60 cm tall, they produce cup-shaped flowers up to 10 cm across in April and May, in this mix of reds, yellows, pinks, and oranges. This is a European horticultural selection (Netherlands), bred by crossing garden tulips with a botanical tulip from Central Asia.
This cross gives them sturdy stems that withstand wind and rain, and better year-on-year performance than most tulips. Among our flower bulbs, these bring the most color to spring, in flower beds and large pots alike.
Which tulip should you choose?
- Darwin tulips, mixed colors (this plant) — red, yellow, pink, and orange, 50 to 60 cm tall, with large flowers up to 10 cm across in April and May. For a colorful, cheerful flower bed.
- Black Triumph Tulip — a single color, almost black purple, 40 to 50 cm tall, blooming in April. For a graphic effect and elegant combinations.
Both bloom at the same time: a few black tulips among the Darwin mix make all the colors stand out.
How many bulbs should you choose?
Tulips make the biggest impact when planted in tight groups: allow about 30 bulbs per square meter, or 10 to 12 bulbs in a pot 30 cm in diameter.
- 30 bulbs: about 1 m², or two to three large pots on a terrace.
- 60 bulbs: about 2 m², for a colorful border along a path.
- 120 bulbs: about 4 m², for a full spring flower bed or tulips to cut throughout April.
The larger the lot, the lower the price per bulb: the 120-bulb lot costs about 35% less per bulb than the 30-bulb lot.
Planting & location
Tulips are planted from October to December, once the soil has cooled, for blooms in April and May.
- Exposure: full sun; in partial shade, the stems grow longer and lean toward the light.
- Depth: 15 to 20 cm, tip pointing up; planted deep, the bulb blooms better the following year.
- Spacing: 10 to 15 cm between bulbs in the ground, 5 cm in pots.
- Soil type: well-drained; add sand to heavy soil, as the bulb rots in waterlogged soil.
- Hardiness: down to -25 °C in the ground, with no protection needed.
Plant the bulbs in groups of 7 to 10 rather than in a row: the mix of colors looks more natural and fuller.
Watering & care
In the ground, autumn and spring rain is enough. In pots, check the moisture with the finger test before each watering.
- Watering: light — at planting, then in pots when the soil is dry on the surface, especially as the buds form.
- Fertilizer: unnecessary in the ground; in pots, apply a bulb fertilizer when the leaves emerge.
- Spent flowers: cut off the flower just below the head as soon as its petals drop, leaving the stem and leaves.
- After flowering: leave the foliage in place to yellow for six weeks; it replenishes the bulb's reserves for the following year.
In pots, bulbs run out of steam more quickly: replant them in the garden after flowering and put new bulbs in the pot in autumn.
Decorating ideas & plant pairings
Their bright colors bring flower beds and large pots to life in spring, following on from other bulbs, as suggested by our guide to plants for sunny balconies.
- To enjoy flowers from February to May, plant Narcissus 'Tête-à-Tête' in front of them — its small yellow flowers open the season, then the tulips take over in April.
- To extend flowering through June, mix them with Allium 'Purple Sensation' — its purple globes open just as the tulips fade.
- To hide the foliage after flowering, plant them among clumps of the Festuca, Carex and Stipa grass trio — the grasses conceal the yellowing leaves.
- For a patio version, plant 10 to 12 bulbs in the green foliage Elho Greenville Round pot in Ø25 cm — its understated green leaves all the room for the mix's colors.
In a pot, plant the bulbs almost touching, tip to tip: you'll get a compact bouquet that blooms all at once.
Verdeia Tips
- Wait for the soil to cool: preferably plant from late October onward. In soil that is still warm, tulip bulbs are more susceptible to disease.
- Cut them as buds for the vase: pick the tulips in the morning, when the bud is colored but still closed. They last a week in a vase and make a lovely gift bouquet, as shown in our ideas for plants to give as gifts.
- Add a few bulbs each fall: Darwin tulips bloom again for several years, but their flowers get smaller over time. A few new bulbs each year will keep your flower bed full.
