Frequently Asked Questions
Is Clematis armandii 'Apple Blossom' frost-resistant? The plant withstands temperatures down to –10 °C but its flowers freeze at –2 °C — protect it with a frost cloth during late frosts in March-April to preserve the blooms.
When should you prune Clematis armandii 'Apple Blossom'? Prune lightly after flowering in April-May to control growth — never prune in autumn or winter, as 'Apple Blossom' forms its flower buds in autumn and any winter pruning will remove the next spring’s flowers.

🌸 Bright pink buds opening to creamy white in March-April • 🌿 Dark green foliage evergreen all year • 🌙 Sweet and soft fragrance • ☀️ Sun to partial shade • ❄️ Hardy down to –10 °C • 📏 H65 cm | Pot Ø15 cm
The Clematis armandii 'Apple Blossom', or pale pink evergreen clematis, is an evergreen climber native to China, selected for the characteristic pink shade of its buds that open into slightly pearly creamy white star-shaped flowers. From March to April, even before most other climbers, it is covered with abundant and fragrant blooms against a backdrop of shiny dark green foliage that persists all year. Among the clematis in the clematis collection, it is the only evergreen with pink flowers.
Vigorous, undemanding, and hardy down to –10 °C, it is suitable both for large containers and for planting in the ground on a wall or pergola sheltered on a sunny balcony or terrace.
Which Clematis armandii to choose?
Verdeia offers two varieties of Clematis armandii with distinct colors. Here is how to compare them:
- Clematis armandii 'Apple Blossom' (this plant) — bright pink buds opening creamy white, sweet fragrance, March-April. The choice for a touch of pink color at flowering time and a very romantic "apple blossom" effect.
- Clematis armandii — flowers entirely pure white with a slight pearly sheen, similar fragrance, same period. The choice for a purer, brighter atmosphere or to combine white with other colors without risk of color clash.
Exposure & location
Like the white Clematis armandii, the 'Apple Blossom' is sensitive to harsh winters — it is less hardy than deciduous clematis (–10 °C vs –20 °C) and its early March flowers are vulnerable to late frosts. A sheltered location against a south- or west-facing wall is essential for regular flowering. Its evergreen foliage makes the plant a green screen all year round, even in winter.
- Exposure: full sun or bright partial shade — sheltered from cold winds, south or west wall ideal.
- Support: trellis, pergola, wire mesh, or arch — petioles coil by themselves around any thin support.
- Soil: fertile, fresh, and well-drained — base shaded or mulched.
- In a pot: large container at least 40 cm, substrate renewed every 2 years — bring indoors or protect if temperatures drop below –8 °C.
If a late frost threatens while flowers are open, cover the plant with a protective veil at night — 'Apple Blossom' flowers freeze at –2 °C even though the plant tolerates down to –10 °C.
Watering & care
'Apple Blossom' belongs to group 1 — it flowers on last year’s wood and requires no mandatory pruning. In pots, the finger test helps gauge watering. Never prune in autumn or winter — if evergreen foliage yellows or browns outside of winter, the usual causes are heavy soil or excess water during cold periods.
- Watering: regular in spring and summer — very sparse in winter, never leave soil waterlogged in cold weather.
- Pruning: only after flowering in April-May — light to control volume, never more than one-third.
- Pruning forbidden: never in autumn or winter — would completely remove already formed flower buds.
- Fertilizer: potassium-rich in spring after flowering to support summer growth.
Evergreen foliage renews gradually in summer — it is normal to see old leaves yellow and fall in July-August, replaced by new shiny green shoots.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
The soft pink of the 'Apple Blossom' buds, its creamy white at opening, and its subtle fragrance create a very romantic spring atmosphere — in a sheltered Mediterranean garden as well as on a flowering jungle terrace.
- For a scented pergola from spring to autumn, pair it with the Clematis 'Niobe' velvet red — 'Apple Blossom' opens with its fragrant pink buds in March-April, then 'Niobe' takes over with its large red flowers from May to September, against a backdrop of evergreen foliage all year.
- For a very elegant two-tone pink and white duo, pair it with the white Clematis armandii on the same pergola — both varieties flower simultaneously in March-April, the pink buds of 'Apple Blossom' contrasting with the pure white flowers of the classic armandii.
- For a structuring evergreen wall all year round, plant it in front of a Lonicera henryi background — two evergreen climbers layered, honeysuckle covering the back and clematis flowering in the foreground in spring.
- To enhance the pink buds in a pot, a ceramic container in sage green or bluish gray creates a cool resonance that visually intensifies the warm pink of the buds without competing with the delicacy of the open flowers.
Place 'Apple Blossom' near a garden seating area or an open window — its subtle but present fragrance is especially pleasant early in the morning in spring.
Verdeia Tips
- Protect open flowers from late frosts: the plant tolerates down to –10 °C but flowers freeze at –2 °C — a protective veil placed the night before a cold night in March-April preserves flowering effortlessly and avoids losing an entire season.
- Never prune in autumn or winter: 'Apple Blossom' forms its flower buds in autumn on the current year's wood — any winter pruning completely removes the following spring’s flowers, the most common mistake with evergreen clematis.
- Install the support before planting: the heavy evergreen foliage of 'Apple Blossom' puts significant pressure on its support all year — a sturdy structure sized for several dozen kilos is essential from the start.
