How fast does the Musa tropicana grow indoors? It is one of the fastest-growing houseplants — under optimal conditions, it can produce a new leaf every two to three weeks in spring and summer.

🐾 Non-toxic • 🌿 Large tropical arching leaves • 🌤️ Bright indoors / Gentle Sun • 💧 Regular watering • 📏 H27 cm | Pot Ø12 cm
Musa tropicana, also known as the Indoor Banana Plant, is a compact variety that adapts perfectly to apartment living. Its large, flexible, arching leaves grow quickly, creating a lush tropical atmosphere within the first few weeks. Native to Southeast Asia, it joins the catalog's indoor plants.
Its main advantage is its size-to-price ratio: delivered in a small H27 cm size, it quickly gains volume to reach up to 120 cm indoors, depending on conditions. It is the most accessible banana plant for beginners.
Which banana plant should you choose?
Six banana plants in the catalog, from a desk plant to a terrace tree:
- Musa tropicana (this plant) — large arching leaves on a small plant (H27 cm | Pot Ø12 cm). The most affordable.
- Musa 'Oriental Dwarf' — dwarf indoor banana plant (H25 cm | Pot Ø12 cm). The smallest size.
- Musa acuminata 'Dwarf Cavendish' — dwarf banana plant with young leaves marbled in purplish brown, reaching up to 1.50 m (H75 cm | Pot Ø21 cm). The most compact of the larger sizes.
- Musa 'Ever Red' — burgundy-red undersides of the leaves (H70-90 cm | Pot Ø21 cm). The most colorful.
- Musa ensete 'Maurelli' — blood-red stem and veins, imposing form (H70-90 cm | Pot Ø21 cm). The most spectacular.
- Musa basjoo — hardy to -12 °C (H70-90 cm | Pot Ø21 cm). The only one that can be grown outdoors all year round.
Light & placement
Musa tropicana thrives in bright, warm spaces — the more intense the light, the fuller its foliage and the broader its leaves.
- Light: bright indoor light to filtered full sun — gentle morning or late-afternoon sun is fine.
- Location: living room, conservatory, bright entryway, office.
- Temperature: 20 to 28 °C — avoid temperatures below 15 °C.
- Substrate: rich, well-draining, and slightly moist.
The leaves naturally tear along the veins as soon as they rub against a wall or are exposed to a draft: this is normal for all banana plants.
Watering & care
Banana plants use a lot of water while growing but do not tolerate stagnant water. A well-draining substrate solves the issue, and brown edges almost always indicate air that is too dry.
- Watering: regular — keep the substrate slightly moist, approximately once a week. Do not leave stagnant water in the saucer.
- Humidity: mist the leaves regularly, especially indoors with heating.
- Fertilizer: once a month in spring and summer, use a nitrogen-rich fertilizer to support rapid growth.
- Pruning: remove dry leaves at the base to stimulate new growth.
The lowest leaf turns yellow and dries out as new ones unfurl at the top: this constant renewal is normal for banana plants.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its broad, arching leaves make it an ideal background plant — placed behind more compact plants, it creates immediate depth and plant density.
- Urban jungle composition: pair it with a Monstera deliciosa and an Alocasia macrorrhiza — three large tropical plants with radically different leaf shapes, creating a dense and cohesive urban jungle atmosphere.
- As a background plant: place it in a bright corner behind a Strelitzia nicolai with upright fronds - the Musa's arched foliage and the Strelitzia's straight fronds create a highly effective contrast in form.
- To move up to a larger size, pair it with a Musa 'Dwarf Cavendish' - the same tropical style, but a 75 cm floor plant next to the smaller one.
- Decorative pot: a container in terracotta or natural fibre adds a warm, natural contrast to the leaves' vivid green.
Delivered in Pot Ø12 cm, it will need repotting within the first year: its growth is much faster than that of other indoor plants of this size.
Verdeia tips
- Allow plenty of space: delivered in a compact size, Musa tropicana grows quickly - choose a location where it can reach 80 to 120 cm without being obstructed by the ceiling or furniture.
- Increase humidity in winter: heating dries out the air and causes the leaf tips to turn brown - a tray of damp clay pebbles under the pot or regularly wiping the leaves with a damp cloth effectively offsets this.
- Avoid cold drafts: a window left ajar in winter is enough to damage the large leaves - choose a stable location away from direct sources of cold.
