The Musa basjoo unfurls immense soft green leaves that reach 1.50 meters in length on an upright trunk, creating a tropical atmosphere all by itself. A species native to the Ryukyu Islands, south of Japan, it is the hardiest of the exotic plants in the catalog.
Its distinguishing feature is this hardiness: its rhizome survives down to -12 °C under a good layer of mulch and regrows in spring, whereas other banana trees must be overwintered frost-free. This is what makes it suitable for growing in the ground well beyond the Mediterranean region.

Exposure & location
The banana tree requires plenty of light and, above all, shelter from the wind: its large leaves tear along the veins as soon as the wind blows a little strongly.
- Exposure: sun to partial shade - full sun provides the fastest growth.
- Location: terrace, patio, corner of the garden, sheltered balcony - must be protected from the wind.
- Hardiness: the rhizome survives down to -12 °C with mulch - the foliage itself freezes from -2 °C.
- Soil type: rich, deep and moist — potting soil mixed with compost; banana plants are very hungry feeders.
The foliage disappears every winter and the plant regrows from the base in spring: this is the normal cycle in our climate, not an accident.
Watering & care
A banana plant consumes enormous amounts of water in season: its leaf area transpires far more than that of any other terrace plant. A rich, water-retentive substrate is essential, and browning at the edges almost always indicates a lack of water or air that is too dry.
- Watering: generous from April to September — daily in hot weather when grown in a pot; the substrate must never dry out.
- Drainage: essential nonetheless — plenty of water, but no standing water in winter.
- Fertiliser: every two weeks from April to August — it is one of the most demanding plants in the catalogue.
- Winter mulching: add 30 cm of leaves or straw around the base from November onwards.
- Pruning: cut off frost-damaged leaves in spring only, never before: they protect the heart of the plant during winter.
The shoots that emerge at the base can be separated in spring to propagate the plant, or left in place to form a clump.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
It's the plant that transforms a terrace the fastest: in one season, a well-fed banana plant doubles in size and creates a tropical atmosphere that no European shrub can provide.
- For a colourful jungle, pair it with Musa ensete 'Maurelli' — soft green against blood red, two banana plants with similar silhouettes and contrasting colours.
- To add height and structure, place a Fargesia Rufa behind it — the bamboo's fine vertical form highlights the width of the banana plant's leaves.
- To brighten up winter, add a 'Etna' cherry laurel — its evergreen foliage fills the space when the banana plant has disappeared.
- To enhance the pot, a large container made of natural fibre or terracotta retains moisture better, which this plant constantly needs.
Measured by pot volume, it is the most spectacular plant in the catalogue: 2 to 3 metres tall in three seasons from a Ø21 cm pot.

- Mulch the base from November: this is what makes all the difference between a banana plant that regrows in spring and a dead plant. Thirty centimetres of dry leaves or straw around the base are enough to withstand temperatures down to -12 °C.
- Water much more than you think: in a pot and in midsummer, a banana plant drinks every day. Leaves that curl in on themselves at the end of the day indicate a lack of water, and a heatwave increases its needs even further.
- Do not cut off frost-damaged leaves before March: even when brown and drooping, they provide natural protection around the base of the trunk. Removing them in December directly exposes the living part to the cold.
