💜 Cherry-purple with a yellow heart • 🌤️ Early flowering, from March • 🌱 Dwarf, 10 to 15 cm • 🔁 Returns every year • ☀️ Full sun • ❄️ Hardy • 🪴 Ideal in pots and rockeries • 📏 Bulbs size 6/7
The 'Persian Pearl' tulip is one of the earliest dwarf botanical tulips: from March, its cherry-purple flowers open into stars in the sun to reveal a bright yellow heart, 10 to 15 cm above the ground, over narrow grey-green foliage. It is a selection of Tulipa humilis, a species native to the mountains stretching from south-east Türkiye to Iran and Afghanistan, where it flowers among the scree as soon as the snow melts.
Close to the wild plant, it comes back every spring in well-drained soil and gradually forms fuller clumps. Among our flower bulbs, it is one of the first tulips to flower, ideal in pots, rockeries or low borders.
Which tulip should you choose?
- 'Persian Pearl' tulip (this plant) — dwarf botanical, 10 to 15 cm, cherry-purple with a yellow heart from March. For pots, rockeries and early colour.
- 'Little Beauty' tulip — dwarf botanical, 10 to 15 cm, bright pink with a blue heart in April. To take over in the same spot.
- Mixed Tulipa praestans — 20 to 30 cm, 3 to 5 flowers per bulb in March and April. For a brightly coloured rockery.
- Mixed Darwin tulips — large flowers in bright colours, 50–60 cm, in April and May. For a colourful border and bouquets.
Planted with 'Little Beauty', it opens the season in March and hands over to its neighbour in April: two dwarf tulips in one pot, two flowerings.
How many bulbs should you choose?
Small and compact, it looks best planted in groups: allow about 50 bulbs per square metre, or 10 to 12 bulbs in a pot 20 cm in diameter.
- 25 bulbs: about 0.5 m² in the ground, or two 20 cm pots on a balcony or terrace.
- 50 bulbs: about 1 m², for a low border or a rockery.
- 100 bulbs: about 2 m², for a purple carpet at the front of a border.
- 200 bulbs: about 4 m², to naturalise a rockery, a bank or a large sunny bed.
The larger the pack, the lower the price per bulb: the 200 pack works out at less than half the price per bulb of the 25 pack.
Planting & location
Plant the bulbs from September to December, as long as the ground is not frozen, for flowers from March to April.
- Position: full sun; its flowers only open wide in sunshine, and summer heat on the dormant bulb helps it flower again.
- Depth: 8 to 10 cm, tip pointing up.
- Spacing: 5 to 8 cm between bulbs in the ground, 2 to 3 cm in pots.
- Soil type: well-drained, even poor or stony; the bulb rots in waterlogged soil.
- Hardiness: down to about -15 °C in the ground; in areas with harsher winters, a mulch of dead leaves protects the bulbs, as explained in our guide to cold-hardy plants.
In a rockery or at the foot of a south-facing wall, kept dry in summer, it flowers again year after year and slowly multiplies.
Watering & care
In the ground, rain is enough. In pots, use a free-draining compost mixed with sand or grit, and water only when the surface is dry.
- Watering: low — at planting, then in pots during growth and flowering; none at all in summer.
- Fertilizer: unnecessary in the ground; in pots, use a bulb fertilizer as the leaves emerge.
- Faded flowers: cut them off below the head once withered, leaving the stems and leaves.
- After flowering: let the foliage yellow in place; it recharges the bulb for the following year.
Don't lift the bulbs: left in place and kept dry over summer, they flower again every spring.
Decorating ideas & plant pairings
Its small size and early flowering make it a great ally for pots and sunny balconies from late winter, as our guide which plants for my balcony shows.
- For a yellow echo of its heart, plant Daffodil 'Tête-à-Tête' alongside — its small yellow trumpets, 15 to 20 cm tall, flower in March, at the same time.
- For a blue carpet at its feet, pair it with Siberian Squill — its deep blue bells, 10 to 15 cm tall, flower in March and April and set off the purple.
- To open the season from February, add mixed botanical crocuses — they flower first, then 'Persian Pearl' takes over.
- For a balcony version, plant 10 to 12 bulbs in a 20 to 25 cm pot, above daffodils planted deeper, following our method for planting bulbs in pots in autumn — a pot in purple and yellow bloom from March.
Its flowers close in the evening and in dull weather, then open again into stars in the sun: place it where you will see it in the middle of the day.
Verdeia tips
- Plant as soon as they arrive: the small bulbs of botanical tulips dry out quickly; get them into the ground within a few days.
- Keep them dry in summer: in pots, move the container out of the rain once the foliage has yellowed, then put it back outside in autumn.
- Plant near a path: along a walkway or by a door, its early flowers catch the eye from the first fine days of March.

Will the plant look exactly like the photo?
The photos accurately represent the variety and the stated size. Since each plant is unique, slight differences in shape, foliage, or color may occur — and that’s part of their charm.
What are the delivery times and conditions?
Orders ship within 48 working hours, with tracked delivery in 2 to 5 working days via DPD. Shipping costs and the free-shipping threshold depend on your country — see our delivery page. You receive a tracking link as soon as your parcel leaves.
What should I do when my plant arrives?
Open your package as soon as you receive it and carefully remove the plant from its packaging. Let it acclimate for 24 hours in its new environment before watering. If it has been slightly stressed during transport, it will recover its shape after one or two days in the light.
What should I do if my plant arrives damaged?
Contact us within 48 hours with a photo of the issue. Our team will assess the situation and offer you the best solution: replacement, partial refund, or recovery advice.
Can I return a plant?
