The poet's narcissus 'Recurvus', known as pheasant's eye, bears one flower per stem: pure white petals swept slightly backwards surround a small yellow cup with a green center, edged with a fine red rim. Its fragrant flowers open in late April and May on stems about 35 cm tall, when most other daffodils have already faded. It is a European horticultural selection (United Kingdom), introduced in 1891 by the nurseryman Peter Barr and awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
Planted in beds, in a large pot or in a lawn, it returns every spring and forms ever fuller clumps. Among our flower bulbs, it is the latest daffodil: it extends the daffodil season into May.
Which daffodil should you choose?
- Poet's narcissus 'Recurvus' (this plant) — fragrant white flowers with a red-rimmed yellow eye, about 35 cm, late April-May. For beds, lawns and fragrant bouquets.
- 'Thalia' daffodil — pure white and fragrant, 30 to 35 cm tall, with two to three flowers per stem in April. For elegant flower beds, pots, and bouquets.
- 'Carlton' daffodil — one large yellow cupped flower per stem, 40 to 45 cm, in March-April. For gardens, lawns and bouquets.
Planted together, all three flower from March to May: Carlton opens the season, Thalia follows in April and Recurvus closes it in May.
How many bulbs should you choose?
Poet's narcissi make the biggest impact planted in groups of 10 to 15: allow 25 to 35 bulbs per square meter, or 6 to 8 bulbs in a pot 25 to 30 cm in diameter.
- 20 bulbs (size 12/14): about 0.7 m², or 3 large pots on a balcony or terrace.
- 30 bulbs: about 1 m², or 4 large pots on a balcony or terrace.
- 40 bulbs (size 12/14): about 1.5 m², for a flower bed with larger blooms.
- 60 bulbs: about 2 m², for a bed or a fragrant border.
- 80 bulbs (size 12/14): about 3 m², for a border with the largest flowers.
- 120 bulbs: about 4 m², for a long border or several flower beds.
- 240 bulbs: about 8 m², to naturalize a lawn or the base of trees.
The larger the pack, the lower the price per bulb: the 240-bulb pack works out at about half the price per bulb of the 30-bulb pack.
Planting & location
Plant the bulbs from September to December, as long as the ground is not frozen, for flowering in late April and May, depending on the region.
- Exposure: sun or partial shade; it flowers well under deciduous trees.
- Depth: 12 to 15 cm, tip pointing up.
- Spacing: 10 to 15 cm between bulbs in the ground; 5 cm in a pot.
- Soil type: ordinary and moist, well-drained; its only enemy is standing water.
- Hardiness: down to -20 °C in the ground, no protection needed.
Plant it near a path, a door or a window: its fragrance is best enjoyed up close.
Watering & care
In the ground, rain is enough. In pots, keep the potting mix moist during flowering, but never waterlogged.
- Watering: light — when planting, then in a pot when the potting mix is dry on the surface, especially as the buds emerge.
- Fertilizer: unnecessary in the ground; in pots, use a bulb fertilizer as the leaves emerge.
- Spent flowers: cut them off once they have faded, so the bulb keeps its energy instead of producing seeds.
- After flowering: let the foliage turn yellow for six weeks before cutting it back; these yellowing leaves are normal here, as they nourish the bulb for next year.
In a lawn it flowers late: put off the first mowing until late June, once the leaves have turned yellow.
Decorating ideas & plant pairings
It flowers equally well in sun or partial shade, and its fragrance makes it a good choice among plants for a shady balcony, in a large pot.
- For a flowering meadow, mix it with the snake's head fritillary mix — its purple and white checkered bells, 20 to 30 cm tall, flower in April-May in the same moist soil.
- For a black and white contrast, plant the black Triumph tulip alongside — its almost black purple cups, 40 to 50 cm tall, flower in April and overlap with its first white flowers.
- To extend the flowering, pair it with Allium 'Purple Sensation' — its purple globes on 70 to 80 cm stems open in May above the daffodils and keep flowering into June.
- For a balcony version, plant 6 to 8 bulbs in the green Elho Greenville Easy Balcony planter, Ø25 cm — its green sets off the white petals and the red rim of the eye.
In pots, plant it with earlier daffodils such as Carlton: the pot stays in flower from March to May.
Verdeia tips
- Cut some for a fragrant bouquet: pick the stems when the buds show their color, then stand them alone in water for a few hours before mixing them with other flowers; a few stems are enough to scent a room.
- Give it for its story: the poet's narcissus takes its name from the myth of Narcissus, celebrated by the poets of Antiquity, a symbolism that makes it a flower to give, as explained in our gift plant ideas.
- Let it naturalize: in a lawn or at the base of trees, do not lift the bulbs; the clumps fill out year after year and can be divided every 4 to 5 years if they flower less.
