🌺 Large deep pink flowers with red centers • ☀️ Full sun or bright partial shade • 🦋 Attracts bees and butterflies • ❄️ Hardy down to -20 °C • 🐾 Non-toxic • ✂️ Easy to prune
Hibiscus syriacus 'Woodbridge', or althea, is a hardy shrub covered with large deep pink flowers with dark red centers from July to September. A British horticultural selection of a species native to East Asia, it is one of the plants for sunny balconies that bloom in midsummer, when many others begin to fade.
Its single flowers, around ten centimeters wide, open one after another throughout the season. Its deeply lobed green foliage falls in autumn and regrows late in spring. Delivered young in a 17 cm pot, it forms a dense bush after the first pruning and can reach 2 to 3 m when planted in the ground.
Which hibiscus should you choose?
Eight altheas in the catalog, as bushes or trained as standards:
- Hibiscus 'Woodbridge' (this plant) — large single deep pink flowers with a red center, as a bush in a Ø17 cm pot. The most colorful of the bushes.
- Hibiscus 'Hamabo' — very pale pink flowers with a purple center, as a bush in a Ø17 cm pot. The softest.
- Hibiscus Blue Chiffon® standard — soft blue flowers with a lace-like center. The only blue one.
- Hibiscus Lavender Chiffon® standard — lavender flowers with a lace-like center. The most romantic.
- Hibiscus Magenta Chiffon® standard — magenta pink flowers with a lace-like center. The most vibrant.
- Hibiscus Starburst Chiffon® standard — white flowers veined with pink. The most graphic.
- Hibiscus White Chiffon® standard — pure white flowers with a lace-like center. The brightest.
- Hibiscus Tricolour standard — three flower colors on a single tree. The most spectacular.
The standards form a small tree upon delivery; the bushes cost less and can be freely shaped through pruning.
Exposure & placement
The more sun it receives, the more it flowers: six hours of direct sun per day is ideal. Once established, it tolerates heat, wind, and moderate drought.
- Exposure: full sun, or bright partial shade with less abundant flowering.
- Location: south- or west-facing balcony, terrace, large container, flowering hedge in the garden.
- Hardiness in a pot: down to -20 °C — it stays outdoors all year round.
- Soil type: any well-draining potting soil, including alkaline soil.
It loses its leaves in autumn and does not start growing again until April or May: bare branches in spring are normal.
Watering & care
In a pot, it needs regular water during flowering: testing the substrate with your finger prevents overwatering, and going away for a few days in summer should be planned in advance.
- Watering: moderate — regular from June to September, when the substrate is dry on the surface; almost none in winter.
- Water: tap water is suitable.
- Fertilizer: fertilizer for flowering plants, every three weeks from April to August.
- Pruning: in late winter, cut the previous year's branches back to two or three buds.
- Repotting: in spring, in a 25 to 30 cm pot, using shrub potting soil.
It flowers on the current year's shoots: hard pruning in March produces more flowers, not fewer.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
Its bright pink blends well with the blues and purples of plants that share the same balcony exposure in full sun.
- For a blue and pink summer flower bed, plant a 'Poppin Purple' agapanthus at its base — its deep purple flower umbels bloom at the same time as the hibiscus.
- For a Mediterranean feel, surround it with 'Hidcote Blue' lavender — its fragrant purple flower spikes and the pink flowers attract butterflies together.
- To dress up the edge of the container, add a 'Azura Blue' blue fescue — its blue-gray clump makes the pink stand out and conceals the bare base of the stems.
- To enhance the pot, choose the anthracite Capi Nature Skin pot — its dark tone makes the large pink flowers stand out.
Paired with Hibiscus 'Hamabo', it creates a flowering hedge in two shades of pink from July to September.
Verdeia tips
- Don't think it's dead in spring: it is one of the last shrubs to break dormancy. Scratch a branch with your fingernail: if the wood is green underneath, it will grow back, like all the cold-hardy plants that spend winter outdoors in pots.
- Watch the buds in summer: a lack of water in hot weather causes the buds to drop before they open, while yellowing leaves often signal the opposite problem: overwatering.
- Give it as a housewarming gift: hardy, safe for animals, and flowering every summer, it settles easily on any sunny balcony and is one of the plants to give as gifts that last for years.
