Frequently Asked Questions
Why are the leaves of my Dracaena turning yellow? Yellowing is almost always due to overwatering or stagnant water. Reduce the watering frequency and make sure the pot is well-drained. Lower leaves yellowing individually is normal — it’s a natural renewal of the foliage.
Is the Dracaena Janet Lind toxic to pets? Yes, it contains irritating saponins and is toxic if ingested by cats and dogs. Keep it out of reach of your pets.

🌿 Glossy dark green foliage • 🏛️ Structured upright form • 🌑 Tolerates low light • 💧 Minimal watering • 🌬️ Air-purifying • ⚠️ Toxic to animals
The Dracaena Janet Lind, or Dragon Tree, is a tropical plant native to Africa, known for its hardiness and exceptional tolerance of low light. Its rosettes of long, glossy dark green leaves give it an elegant, structured upright form — a plant column that structures the space without overwhelming it.
Available in two sizes — D17/H70 cm and D24/H130 cm. Air-purifying, very easy to care for, and ideal for low-light spaces. Please note: toxic to animals.
Which size should you choose?
Dracaena Janet Lind is available in two sizes — same foliage, same care, different visual impact:
- D17 cm / H70 cm — medium size, ideal for a high shelf, desk or living room corner. Fits into a space without dominating it.
- D24 cm / H130 cm — imposing size, perfect for structuring a large living room, entryway or hallway. Creates a strong vertical plant presence.
For a first Dracaena, the D17/H70 cm size is the most versatile. The D24/H130 cm size is reserved for spaces that can accommodate a large statement plant.
Which Dracaena variety should you choose?
The Dracaena genus comes in a wide range of distinctive foliage types. Here are the available profiles:
- Dracaena Janet Lind (this plant) — uniform, glossy dark green foliage. The most understated and elegant.
- Dracaena Marginata — slender leaves with red edges, highly graphic. The most iconic.
- Dracaena Lemon Lime — variegated green and lemon-yellow foliage. The brightest.
- Dracaena Magenta — spectacular purple and green foliage. The most colorful.
- Dracaena Anita — large dark green leaves, imposing H100 cm size. The most majestic.
Other varieties of Dracaena are available — Bicolor, Compacta and more.
Light & placement
Dracaena Janet Lind is one of the most low-light-tolerant houseplants - a valuable asset for dark spaces.
- Ideal exposure: moderate to low indirect light - indoor office, hallway, or bedroom away from windows.
- Tolerates: partial shade, artificial light alone, dry air.
- Avoid: direct sun, which burns and fades the leaves.
- Temperature: 15–25 °C, tolerates fluctuations.
If the leaves turn green and lose their shine, move the plant closer to a light source. If the leaves turn yellow, it is almost always due to excess water - not a lack of light. Its ideal location depends on the balance between light and humidity.
Watering & care
- Watering: minimal - let the substrate dry out on the surface between waterings.
- Frequency: approximately once every 2 weeks in spring and summer, once a month in winter.
- Water: preferably lime-free water - Dracaena is sensitive to the fluoride in tap water.
- Drainage: a pot with drainage holes is essential - excess water is its main cause of death.
- Fertilizer: diluted liquid fertilizer for green plants, every 6 to 8 weeks in spring and summer.
Dracaena prefers being underwatered to being overwatered. When in doubt, always wait. Proper watering should be based on the substrate drying out, which prevents overwatering.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
Its upright habit and glossy dark green foliage make it a structural plant - it fills vertical space without spreading out.
- In a dark corner: the D24/H130 cm transforms a dimly lit corner into a striking botanical focal point - where few other plants would thrive.
- In an arrangement: pair it with a Zamioculcas or a Sansevieria for a trio of shade-tolerant plants with highly distinctive foliage.
- Ideal Pot: matte black, grey, or terracotta ceramic - dark tones enhance the glossy dark green without competing with it.
Verdeia tips
- The lower leaves naturally turn yellow - this is a normal process of foliage renewal. Gently remove them at the base as soon as they turn yellow. This is not a sign of disease.
- Too much water is its only real risk - root rot, soft stems, leaves that turn extensively yellow. If in doubt, always wait before watering.
- Sensitive to fluoride - highly chlorinated or fluoridated tap water can cause brown tips. Prefer filtered water or water that has been left to stand for 24 h. The first few days matter: a few simple steps can help you welcome a new plant.
- ⚠️ Toxic to animals - contains irritating saponins. Keep it out of reach of cats and dogs. In a home with pets, it is best to choose from these pet-friendly plants.
