🌿 Wavy leaves edged in golden yellow • 🌴 Several tiered trunks • ☀️ Bright indirect light • 💧 Moderate watering • 🌡️ 18-27 °C • 📏 H50-55 cm | Pot Ø17 cm
The Dracaena fragrans 'Golden Coast', or variegated dragon tree, bears clusters of broad, wavy, deep green leaves, crisply edged in golden yellow, at the top of several trunks of different heights. It is a horticultural selection from Europe (Netherlands), spotted in 1987 in Naaldwijk as a natural mutation of Dracaena fragrans 'Steudneri', whose foliage is entirely green.
Delivered at 50-55 cm tall in a 17 cm pot, it already forms a miniature tree silhouette, with a crown of leaves on each trunk. Among our indestructible plants, it is one of the most forgiving: it copes with a missed watering, the dry air of a heated flat and medium light.
Which Dracaena should you choose?
The Dracaena genus comes in broad or fine, green or variegated foliage — here is how the Golden Coast compares:
- Dracaena fragrans 'Golden Coast' (this plant) — broad, wavy, deep green leaves edged in golden yellow, on several trunks, H50-55 cm | Pot Ø17 cm. The choice for bright foliage and a miniature tree shape.
- Dracaena 'Janet Lind' — same species, solid dark green leaves, compact habit. The choice for a less bright corner.
- Dracaena 'Lemon Lime' — narrower leaves striped with lime yellow. The choice for brighter, zingier variegation.
- Dracaena marginata — ribbon-thin leaves edged in red. The choice for a light, airy silhouette.
Exposure & location
The Golden Coast keeps a well-defined yellow edge in bright filtered light. In a darker room it keeps growing, but its new leaves come out greener.
- Exposure: bright indirect light, 1 or 2 metres from a window; it tolerates partial shade.
- Location: living room, office, bedroom, bright hallway — a stable spot, away from radiators and draughts.
- Temperature: 18 to 27 °C, never below 13 °C.
- Soil type: well-draining potting mix for green plants, lightened with perlite.
Avoid direct sun behind glass in summer: it marks the leaves with dry patches and fades the golden edge.
Watering & maintenance
Let the top 3 to 5 centimetres of potting mix dry out between waterings. The dragon tree is sensitive to the limescale and chlorine in tap water, one of the most common causes of brown leaf tips and edges.
- Frequency: about once a week in spring and summer, every 10 to 15 days in winter.
- Water quality: rainwater, filtered water or tap water left to stand overnight.
- Drainage: a pot with drainage holes is essential, and never any standing water at the bottom of the decorative pot.
- Fertilizer: liquid fertilizer for green plants, once a month from April to September.
- Cleaning: wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to keep them glossy.
- Repotting: every 2 to 3 years in spring, into a pot only slightly larger.
Lower leaves that yellow and drop one by one are part of normal growth: this is how the trunk gets taller.
Decor ideas & plant pairings
Its miniature tree silhouette and golden edge brighten a corner of the room, and it suits almost every room in the home, from the living room to the office.
- For an easy-going duo, pair it with Zamioculcas — its very glossy dark green leaves bring out the yellow of the Golden Coast, and both cope with a missed watering.
- In an office, stand it on the floor near a window or on a low cabinet: at 50-55 cm, it gives structure to the space without blocking the view.
- In a bedroom, set it on a stool or a plant stand so that its crown is at eye level from the bed.
- To echo the golden edge, slip the pot into the Elho Jazz Round amber yellow decorative pot in Ø19 cm — the warm yellow picks up the colour of the edging and ties the whole look together.
Against a dark wall, green or midnight blue, the yellow edge of the leaves stands out even more and creates a bright effect even far from the window.
Verdeia tips
- Turn the pot a quarter turn every two weeks: the crowns orient themselves towards the light, and regular rotation keeps a balanced silhouette.
- Cut back an overly tall trunk in spring: a clean cut triggers two or three new shoots just below the cut, and the cut piece roots easily as a cutting.
- Do not banish it to complete darkness: it copes well with dimly lit rooms, but keeps its best colours a few metres from a window.

Orders ship within 48 working hours, with tracked delivery in 2 to 5 working days via DPD. Shipping costs and the free-shipping threshold depend on your country — see our delivery page. You receive a tracking link as soon as your parcel leaves.
What should I do when my plant arrives?
