❤️ Red and white tulip mix • 🔥 Plain, flamed or fringed flowers • 🌿 Sturdy 40 to 50 cm stems • 🌤️ Flowers from April to May • 💐 Superb in bouquets • ☀️ Full sun • ❄️ Very hardy • 📏 Bulbs size 11/12
The 'Dutch Design' tulip brings together tulips in bold red and white, in a variety of forms: pure white flowers, white flowers flamed with cherry red and burgundy flowers with fringed petals. From April to May, they open on straight stems about 40 to 50 cm tall. It is a horticultural selection from Europe (the Netherlands), made up of large-flowered garden tulips.
In beds, large pots or bouquets, the red and white contrast gives a festive feel to the garden and the balcony alike. Among our flower bulbs, it is the most contrasting tulip mix, the one for cheerful beds and bright bouquets.
Which tulip should you choose?
- 'Dutch Design' tulip (this plant) — mix of red, white and flamed flowers, 40 to 50 cm, April to May. For a contrasting bed and cheerful bouquets.
- White Triumph Tulip — smooth cup-shaped flowers in pure white, 40 to 50 cm, in April. For a bright, classic bed.
- 'Breakdance' tulip — black-purple and creamy white fringed flowers, 40 to 50 cm, April to May. For graphic contrast and unusual bouquets.
Add a few white Triumph tulips to the mix: pure white makes the red and flamed flowers stand out even more.
How many bulbs should you choose?
Tulips make the most impact planted in tight groups: allow about 40 bulbs per square metre, or 10 to 12 bulbs in a 30 cm diameter pot.
- 15 bulbs: one large pot on a balcony or terrace, or a group of about 0.4 m² in a bed.
- 30 bulbs: about 0.75 m², or two to three large pots.
- 60 bulbs: about 1.5 m², for a red and white bed or a border along a path.
- 120 bulbs: about 3 m², for a large border or a cutting patch of tulips.
The bigger the pack, the lower the price per bulb: the 120-bulb pack works out at less than half the price per bulb of the 15-bulb pack.
Planting & location
Tulips are planted from October to December, once the soil has cooled, for flowers from April to May.
- Position: full sun; in sunshine, the flowers open wide and the red flames stand out against the white.
- Depth: 15 cm, pointed end up.
- Spacing: 10 cm between bulbs in the ground, 3 to 5 cm in pots.
- Soil: well drained; add sand to heavy soil, as the bulb rots in waterlogged ground.
- Hardiness: down to -25 °C in the ground, no protection needed.
Plant the bulbs at random rather than by colour: the red and white mix looks more natural and more lively.
Watering & care
In the ground, rain is enough. In pots, check the moisture with the finger test and water only when the compost is dry 2 cm down.
- Watering: low — at planting, then in pots when the compost is dry on the surface, especially while the buds are forming.
- Fertilizer: unnecessary in the ground; in pots, use a bulb fertilizer as the leaves emerge.
- Faded flowers: cut the flower off just below the head as soon as it drops its petals, leaving the stem and leaves.
- After flowering: let the foliage turn yellow where it is for six weeks; it rebuilds the bulb’s reserves.
In a pot, give it a quarter turn every week in spring: the stems stay straight instead of leaning towards the light.
Decorating ideas & plant pairings
Their red and white contrast brightens a bed or a sunny balcony, as our guide to plants for a sunny balcony shows.
- For a white carpet at their feet, plant Muscari 'White Magic' — its ivory-white 10 to 15 cm spikes flower in March-April and carry the white down to ground level.
- For a touch of blue, plant Armenian grape hyacinth at their feet — its bright blue 15 to 20 cm spikes flower in March-April and make the red of the tulips stand out.
- To end the season in white, plant Allium 'Mount Everest' behind them — its 10 to 12 cm white globes, on 1 m to 1.20 m stems, open in May-June above the tulip foliage.
- For a balcony version, plant 10 to 12 bulbs in a 30 cm pot, with muscari above them, following our method for planting bulbs in pots in autumn — a pot in flower from March to May on a sunny balcony or terrace.
In a vase, combine the different flowers of the mix: plain, flamed and fringed, they make a very lively bouquet.
Verdeia tips
- Wait for the soil to cool: ideally plant from late October. In soil that is still warm, tulip bulbs are more prone to disease.
- Cut them in bud for the vase: pick them in the morning, when the bud is coloured but still closed; they then last a week in a vase and make a festive bouquet among plants to give as gifts.
- Add a few bulbs every autumn: tulips flower again, but the blooms get smaller over the years. A few fresh bulbs each year keep a border well filled.

FAQ – Everything to know before adopting your Verdeia plant
How are my plants prepared before shipping?
All our plants are selected from our European partner nurseries. Before shipping, they are watered, cleaned, and protected with breathable, secure packaging. Each package is designed to ensure your plant arrives in perfect health, without any transport-related stress.
Will the plant look exactly like the photo?
The photos accurately represent the variety and the stated size. Since each plant is unique, slight differences in shape, foliage, or color may occur — and that’s part of their charm.
What are the delivery times and conditions?
Orders ship within 48 working hours, with tracked delivery in 2 to 5 working days via DPD. Shipping costs and the free-shipping threshold depend on your country — see our delivery page. You receive a tracking link as soon as your parcel leaves.
What should I do when my plant arrives?
Open your package as soon as you receive it and carefully remove the plant from its packaging. Let it acclimate for 24 hours in its new environment before watering. If it has been slightly stressed during transport, it will recover its shape after one or two days in the light.
What should I do if my plant arrives damaged?
Contact us within 48 hours with a photo of the issue. Our team will assess the situation and offer you the best solution: replacement, partial refund, or recovery advice.
Can I return a plant?
Since plants are living beings, standard returns are not possible. However, we guarantee good health upon delivery: if the plant arrives damaged, it will be replaced free of charge. For any other cases (order error, decorative pot, accessory), returns are possible within 14 days.
