🌿 Leaves divided into wavy lobes • 💚 Vivid, bright green • 🪴 Dense clump, no support • ⛅ Bright light or partial shade • 💧 Moderate watering • 👍 Easy-care • 📏 H70 cm | Pot Ø19 cm
Philodendron 'Lickety Split' bears large leaves deeply divided into irregular, wavy lobes, in a vivid, bright green. A horticultural hybrid originating from species in the tropical forests of South America, it belongs to the philodendrons that are self-supporting: all its leaves emerge from the heart of the plant on long petioles, forming a dense clump that does not climb.
At 70 cm tall, it immediately adds the volume of a tropical plant, with lighter, airier foliage than a philodendron with full leaves. It is one of the large indoor plants that are easy to live with: no support, no pruning, and tolerant of partial shade.
Which philodendron should you choose?
The philodendrons in the catalog, according to the desired leaf shape:
- Philodendron 'Lickety Split' (this plant) — large leaves divided into wavy lobes, upright clump, H70 cm. The medium-sized option with divided leaves.
- Philodendron Selloum 'Atom' — small, wavy, curly leaves, compact habit, H25 cm. The mini version for a shelf.
- Philodendron Pedatum — finely fingered leaves, climbing habit on a support, H130 cm. The tallest version.
- Philodendron 'Imperial Green' — large, full, glossy oval leaves, also available in H65 cm. For more understated foliage.
Its divided leaves are reminiscent of those of the monstera: our philodendron or monstera comparison helps you choose between the two.
Light & placement
Lickety Split likes light without direct sun. The more it receives, the larger and more deeply divided its new leaves will be; in partial shade, they remain smaller and less lobed.
- Light: bright and indirect, 1 or 2 meters from a window; partial shade tolerated; avoid direct afternoon sun.
- Placement: living room, office, bright corner of a room, next to a sofa or a window with a sheer curtain.
- Temperature: between 18 and 27 °C, never below 15 °C.
- Avoid: radiators, air conditioning directed at the plant, and cold drafts.
Allow for about 80 cm of width once established: its long petioles spread out like a fan and the clump widens over the years.
Watering & care
Like all self-supporting philodendrons, it tolerates missed watering better than waterlogged soil. Lower leaves that turn yellow generally indicate overwatering, as explained in our article on yellowing leaves.
- Watering: moderate — when the first 3 to 4 centimeters of potting soil are dry, about once a week in summer and every two to three weeks in winter.
- Water: at room temperature; empty the saucer after 15 minutes.
- Fertilizer: houseplant fertilizer, once a month from spring to the end of summer.
- Humidity: the ambient air in a home suits it; more humid air produces larger leaves.
- Repotting: every two to three years in spring, in a pot 3 to 5 cm wider; follow our guide to repotting houseplants.
Dust the leaves with a damp cloth, supporting each lobe from underneath: the cut-outs are delicate and crease if pulled.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
Its airy, deeply cut foliage instantly creates a jungle atmosphere, especially surrounded by plants with solid or patterned leaves, as in our complete philodendron guide.
- To contrast the shapes, pair it with an Alocasia wentii — its large, solid heart-shaped leaves contrast with the philodendron's cut-out leaves.
- To dress the base, place a Calathea Makoyana in front — its low leaves patterned with dark green add a motif in the foreground.
- For a luminous touch, add a Maranta 'Fascinator Lemon Lime' — its lime-green veins complement the bright green of the lobes.
- To enhance the pot, choose the Elho B.for Soft anthracite decorative pot, Ø22 cm — its clean lines and dark color highlight the plant's split-leaf silhouette.
Place it in front of a light-colored wall with light coming from the side: the cuts in its leaves cast graphic shadows that become part of the decor.
Verdeia tips
- Rotate the pot each month: the petioles grow toward the light. A regular quarter turn keeps the clump round and balanced instead of forming a fan leaning to one side.
- Leave the aerial roots: a few thick roots may emerge at the base of the petioles. Guide them toward the potting soil; they help the plant stay upright.
- Slow down in winter: space out waterings and stop fertilizing from October to March, as outlined in our 5 steps for indoor plants in winter.
