🎄 Living Christmas tree, roots and all • 💙 Silvery-blue needles • ❄️ Hardy down to -30 °C • 🐾 Non-toxic • 📏 H60 cm | Pot Ø23 cm
Picea pungens 'Glauca', or Colorado blue spruce, is the blue Christmas tree par excellence. This conifer is native to North America (United States), where it grows wild in the Rocky Mountains — it is the state tree of Colorado. The 'Glauca' selection brings together the plants with the bluest foliage: a thin layer of natural wax covers the needles and gives them that much sought-after silvery-blue colour.
Its stiff, prickly needles, arranged all around the shoots, form a neatly tiered conical habit, with horizontal branches perfect for hanging decorations. Delivered at 60 cm tall in a Ø23 cm pot, it is the bluest of our potted Christmas trees.
Which Christmas tree to choose?
- Picea pungens 'Glauca' (this plant) — stiff silvery-blue needles, tiered branches, H60 cm. The choice for the most intense blue.
- Picea glauca 'Sander's Blue' — compact, dense cone of fine bluish needles turning blue-green, H60 cm. The choice for a softer blue and a tighter silhouette.
- Picea glauca 'Conica' — dense cone of soft green needles, from H45 cm to H110 cm. The choice for a classic Christmas tree, in several sizes.
- Picea omorika — narrow, slender silhouette, dark green needles with silvery undersides, H70 cm. The choice when width is limited.
Light & placement
A mountain tree, the Colorado blue spruce lives outdoors all year round and only comes inside for the holidays. It is a sun lover: full light is what keeps its foliage at its brightest blue.
- During the holidays: 10 to 15 days indoors, in a cool, very bright room, away from radiators and any heat source.
- The rest of the year: outdoors, ideally in full sun, on a terrace, a sunny balcony or in the garden.
- Hardiness: down to -30 °C — it is made for harsh winters.
- Avoid: shade, which turns its needles green, and constantly waterlogged soil.
Once well established outdoors, it copes with dry summers better than most spruces — an asset for a terrace in full sun.
Watering & care
In a pot, its root ball should stay slightly moist all year round, without excess: summer and holiday departures are when it needs the most attention, with the watering solutions described in our article on plants while you're away.
- Indoors: check the root ball every 2 to 3 days and keep it slightly moist, with no standing water in the pot cover.
- Outdoors in a pot: water as soon as the surface of the soil is dry, more often in summer, and occasionally in winter during dry, frost-free spells.
- Fertiliser: a conifer fertiliser in spring.
- Pruning: unnecessary, its conical habit is natural.
- Repotting: every 2 years in spring, into a larger pot — planted in the ground, it eventually becomes a tall tree with a pyramidal habit.
Decorating ideas & plant combinations
Its silvery blue goes beautifully with white, silver and deep red decorations, and its neatly tiered horizontal branches show off every bauble.
- For a very festive blue and red contrast, pair Picea pungens 'Glauca' with a Helleborus orientalis 'Double Ellen Red' — the hellebore's double purple flowers make the cool blue of the needles sing, and both then spend the winter outdoors.
- For a refined palette of blue-greys, place a Helleborus lividus 'Purple Marble' at its foot, whose silver-marbled foliage echoes the waxy tone of the needles.
- On a south-facing terrace after the holidays, it gives structure to a sunny corner alongside grasses and sun-loving perennials — find pairing ideas in our guide to full-sun balcony plants.
- In a black basket for the holidays, the contrast makes the silvery blue pop: a Ø26 cm black Jorck basket takes its Ø23 cm pot and gives the living room a very graphic look.
Verdeia tips
- Wear gloves to decorate it: its needles are among the stiffest and prickliest of all spruces — thin gardening gloves make hanging the garlands far more pleasant.
- Do not rub or polish its needles: their blue comes from a thin layer of natural wax — no leaf-shine products, and no misting with hard water, which would leave white marks.
- Keep an eye on the needle tips: tips that turn brown indoors signal air that is too dry and too warm — the causes and solutions are explained in our article on brown leaf tips and edges, and the best remedy is still to move it somewhere cool outdoors.
