💜 Ivory white flamed with purple • 🌷 Cup-shaped Triumph tulip • 🌿 Sturdy 45 to 50 cm stems • 🌤️ Flowers from April to May • 💐 Superb in bouquets • ☀️ Full sun • ❄️ Very hardy • 📏 Bulbs size 11/12
The 'Flaming Flag' tulip opens cup-shaped flowers about 6 cm across, ivory white and streaked with deep purple flames that rise from the heart of the petals. From April to May, they stand on sturdy 45 to 50 cm stems that hold up well to wind and rain. It is a horticultural selection from Europe (the Netherlands) in the Triumph tulip group, introduced in 2007.
Each flower carries a slightly different pattern, giving the bed the look of a hand-painted picture. Among our flower bulbs, it is the most graphic two-tone tulip, as lovely in a large pot as in a bouquet.
Which tulip should you choose?
- 'Flaming Flag' tulip (this plant) — ivory white flowers flamed with purple, 45 to 50 cm, April to May. For a graphic bed and elegant bouquets.
- 'Flaming Beauty' tulip — mix of flamed flowers in yellow, orange, white, red and purple, 35 to 50 cm, April to May. For a very colourful bed.
- White Triumph Tulip — smooth cup-shaped flowers in pure white, 40 to 50 cm, in April. For a bright, classic bed.
- 'Candy Purple Prince' tulip — mix of early purple and lilac tulips, 30 to 40 cm, from late March to late April. For a pot or a balcony window box.
Plant a few white Triumph tulips among them: pure white makes the purple flames of 'Flaming Flag' stand out.
How many bulbs should you choose?
Tulips make the most impact planted in tight groups: allow about 40 bulbs per square metre, or 10 to 12 bulbs in a 30 cm diameter pot.
- 15 bulbs: one large pot on a balcony or terrace, or a group of about 0.4 m² in a bed.
- 30 bulbs: about 0.75 m², or two to three large pots.
- 60 bulbs: about 1.5 m², for a white and purple bed or a border along a path.
- 120 bulbs: about 3 m², for a large border or a cutting patch of tulips.
The bigger the pack, the lower the price per bulb: the 120-bulb pack works out at less than half the price per bulb of the 15-bulb pack.
Planting & location
Tulips are planted from October to December, once the soil has cooled, for flowers from April to May.
- Position: full sun; in sunshine, the flowers open wide and the purple flames stand out against the white.
- Depth: 15 cm, pointed end up.
- Spacing: 10 cm between bulbs in the ground, 3 to 5 cm in pots.
- Soil: well drained; add sand to heavy soil, as the bulb rots in waterlogged ground.
- Hardiness: down to -25 °C in the ground, no protection needed.
Plant them in tight groups of 10 to 15 bulbs: the purple flames echo from flower to flower and the effect is more striking.
Watering & care
In the ground, rain is enough. In pots, check the moisture with the finger test and water only when the compost is dry 2 cm down.
- Watering: low — at planting, then in pots when the compost is dry on the surface, especially while the buds are forming.
- Fertilizer: unnecessary in the ground; in pots, use a bulb fertilizer as the leaves emerge.
- Faded flowers: cut the flower off just below the head as soon as it drops its petals, leaving the stem and leaves.
- After flowering: let the foliage turn yellow where it is for six weeks; it rebuilds the bulb’s reserves.
In a pot, give it a quarter turn every week in spring: the stems stay straight instead of leaning towards the light.
Decorating ideas & plant pairings
Their purple-flamed white brightens a bed or a sunny balcony, as our guide to plants for a sunny balcony shows.
- For a touch of blue, plant Armenian grape hyacinth at their feet — its bright blue 15 to 20 cm spikes flower in March-April and go well with the purple of the flames.
- To extend the show into June, plant Allium 'Purple Sensation' behind them — its purple balls, 8 to 10 cm across on 70 to 80 cm stems, open in May-June and pick up the purple of the flames.
- For a balcony version, plant 10 to 12 bulbs in a 30 cm pot, with muscari above them, following our method for planting bulbs in pots in autumn — a pot in flower from March to May on a sunny balcony or terrace.
In a vase, pair them with a few plain white tulips: the bouquet keeps a simple look and the purple flames stand out even more.
Verdeia tips
- Wait for the soil to cool: ideally plant from late October. In soil that is still warm, tulip bulbs are more prone to disease.
- Cut them in bud for the vase: pick them in the morning, when the bud is coloured but still closed; they then last a week in a vase and make a festive bouquet among plants to give as gifts.
- Add a few bulbs every autumn: tulips flower again, but the blooms get smaller over the years. A few fresh bulbs each year keep a border well filled.

Will the plant look exactly like the photo?
The photos accurately represent the variety and the stated size. Since each plant is unique, slight differences in shape, foliage, or color may occur — and that’s part of their charm.
What are the delivery times and conditions?
Orders ship within 48 working hours, with tracked delivery in 2 to 5 working days via DPD. Shipping costs and the free-shipping threshold depend on your country — see our delivery page. You receive a tracking link as soon as your parcel leaves.
What should I do when my plant arrives?
Open your package as soon as you receive it and carefully remove the plant from its packaging. Let it acclimate for 24 hours in its new environment before watering. If it has been slightly stressed during transport, it will recover its shape after one or two days in the light.
What should I do if my plant arrives damaged?
Contact us within 48 hours with a photo of the issue. Our team will assess the situation and offer you the best solution: replacement, partial refund, or recovery advice.
