🌸 Soft pink young shoots • 🌿 Reddish green in summer • 🔥 Fuchsia red and orange in winter • ☀️ Sun or partial shade • ❄️ Hardy down to -15 °C • 🪴 Compact habit, ideal for a pot
Nandina domestica Blush Pink™ is a compact form of sacred bamboo, grown for its delicate foliage that changes colour throughout the year. Native to an East Asian species (China, Japan), it brings a touch of colour to balconies and terraces even in winter, in sun or partial shade.
In spring, its young leaves emerge soft pink on brick-red stems. In summer, they turn slightly reddish green, then from autumn to the end of winter, all the foliage bursts into fuchsia red and orange. Despite its name, sacred bamboo is not bamboo: it does not spread by runners and remains a rounded clump about 50 to 60 cm wide.
Which colourful-leaved shrub should you choose?
Ten evergreen shrubs from the catalogue, chosen for their foliage rather than their flowers:
- Nandina Blush Pink™ (this plant) — pink young shoots, reddish green in summer and fuchsia red in winter. The most compact, around 50 cm.
- Nandina 'Twilight' — bright pink young shoots, then green marbled with white, coppery in autumn. The only variegated nandina.
- Nandina Obsessed™ 'Seika' — bright red shoots renewed throughout the summer, bronze-red in winter. The reddest of the nandinas in every season.
- Nandina 'Lemon Lime' — lemon-yellow young shoots, then bright acid green. The brightest of the nandinas, without berries.
- Nandina 'Gulf Stream' — coppery young shoots, blue-green in summer and orange-red in winter. A dense, slow-growing ball.
- 'Little Red Robin' photinia on a stem — bright red young shoots on a 90 cm stem. The most colourful in spring, for a sunny position.
- 'Emerald 'n' Gold' spindle tree on a stem — small green and gold leaves, shaped into a ball on a 90 cm stem. The most structured, in sun or partial shade.
- Leucothoe 'Burning Love' — smooth, narrow leaves, burgundy red in spring and purple in winter. The deepest purple, for partial shade in ericaceous soil.
- 'Little Flames' leucothoe - green leaves with flame-red tips in winter. Best suited to a small shade hedge.
- 'Spider Web' Japanese aralia - large palmate leaves speckled with white, for partial shade. The most exotic.
Unlike leucothoes, nandinas grow in ordinary soil, even calcareous soil, and tolerate sun: they are the easiest to place.
Exposure & location
It thrives in sun as well as partial shade, and light creates its colors: the more it receives, the brighter its winter red. Only the scorching, reflected afternoon sun of summer, against a white wall for example, can scorch its leaves.
- Exposure: morning sun or partial shade; full-day sun is acceptable outside heatwaves.
- Location: east- or west-facing balcony, terrace, entrance, railing planter.
- Hardiness in a pot: down to -15 °C - it remains outdoors in winter.
- Soil type: any well-drained compost, acidic, neutral, or calcareous.
In full shade, it stays greener: give it at least a few hours of direct light to enjoy its winter red color.
Watering & care
Once established, it tolerates short dry periods, but in a pot the substrate dries quickly: testing the substrate with your finger indicates when to water, and an absence of a few days in summer requires preparation.
- Watering: moderate - when the first few centimeters of the substrate are dry, less frequently in winter.
- Water: tap water is suitable.
- Fertilizer: fertilizer for shrubs, in spring.
- Pruning: rarely necessary - at the end of winter, cut frost-damaged stems back at the base.
- Repotting: the following spring, in a slightly wider pot, using compost for shrubs.
In a pot, watering at the base in the morning during summer prevents the young pink leaves from browning at the tips.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
Its winter red foliage warms up cold-season arrangements: choosing its neighbors according to exposure makes it possible to pair it with plants that flower during the same period.
- For a winter pink palette, place a 'Eve Price' laurustinus behind it - evergreen, it blooms pale pink from November to March and creates a dark green, shrub-height backdrop.
- For flowers at its base, pair it with a Lenten rose 'Dacaya' — its burgundy-striped pink flowers, from February to April, echo the foliage's colors.
- To brighten the edge of the pot, plant a Carex 'Ice Dance' — its cream edging and fine leaves contrast with the nandina's red.
- To enhance the pot, choose the anthracite Capi Nature Skin pot — the dark gray highlights the fuchsia red in winter.
Arranged in a long planter, several nandinas form a colorful low hedge that does not exceed the railing.
Verdeia tips
- Don't worry about the winter red color: it is a normal reaction to cold and light, not a disease. The foliage turns green again in spring with the new pink shoots. Our cold-hardy plant guide helps you create a winter balcony around it.
- Cut back one stem out of three every two years: cut at the base at the end of winter, the oldest stems make room for new pink shoots and keep the clump dense.
- Keep it out of reach of animals: all parts of the nandina are toxic to dogs, cats, and birds if they consume them.

Will the plant look exactly like the photo?
The photos accurately represent the variety and the stated size. Since each plant is unique, slight differences in shape, foliage, or color may occur — and that’s part of their charm.

What to do upon receiving my plant?
Open your package as soon as you receive it and carefully remove the plant from its packaging. Let it acclimate for 24 hours in its new environment before watering. If it has been slightly stressed during transport, it will recover its shape after one or two days in the light.
