🍷 Chocolate-burgundy foliage • ❤️ Bright red petioles • 🌿 Dense, upright rosette • 🪴 No stake, no vine • ⛅ Bright light or partial shade • 💧 Moderate watering • 📏 H60 cm | Pot Ø19 cm
Philodendron 'Imperial Red' forms a dense rosette of large oval leaves in deep burgundy with chocolate highlights, borne on bright red petioles. Each new leaf emerges ruby red, then darkens over a few weeks. A hybrid derived from species of the tropical forests of South America, it is one of the philodendrons that are self-supporting: it does not climb and keeps a neat silhouette without a stake.
Delivered at 60 cm tall, it brings a dark, warm touch among green foliage. It is one of the easiest large indoor plants with colorful foliage: it tolerates partial shade and copes with a forgotten watering.
Which philodendron should you choose?
The rosette-form philodendrons in the catalog, according to the desired color and size:
- Philodendron 'Imperial Red' (this plant) — large chocolate-burgundy leaves on red petioles, H60 cm. The medium size with dark foliage.
- Philodendron 'Imperial Green' — the same silhouette, glossy green leaves, H65 cm. The green version, perfect for pairing.
- Philodendron Congo Red — dark green leaves with burgundy highlights, H80 cm. The larger size for a more imposing effect.
- Philodendron 'Prince of Orange' — copper-orange young leaves that turn green with age. For a brighter color in a compact size.

Light & placement
Light creates the color: the more indirect light the Imperial Red receives, the more its leaves retain their burgundy-red hue. In partial shade, they turn more bronze-green, a balance explored in detail in our light and humidity guide.
- Light: preferably bright and indirect, partial shade accepted; direct afternoon sun burns dark leaves.
- Location: living room, office, bright entryway, next to a sofa or a curtained glass door.
- Temperature: between 18 and 27 °C, never below 15 °C.
- To avoid: radiators, air conditioning directed at the plant, and cold drafts.
In front of a light-colored, white, or beige wall, its dark foliage stands out like a graphic silhouette.
Watering & care
Its thick leaves and central stem store water: it tolerates being forgotten far better than overwatering. Low leaves that turn yellow almost always indicate soil that is too wet, as explained in our article about yellowing leaves.
- Watering: moderate — when the first 3 to 4 centimeters of potting soil are dry, about once a week in summer and every two to three weeks in winter.
- Water: at room temperature; empty the saucer after 15 minutes.
- Fertilizer: houseplant fertilizer, once a month from spring to the end of summer.
- Cleaning: wipe the leaves with a damp cloth every three or four weeks: dust quickly shows on dark foliage.
- Repotting: every two to three years in spring, in a pot 3 to 5 cm wider; follow our guide to houseplant repotting.
The oldest leaves at the base naturally turn yellow from time to time: cut them off at the stem, as this is the normal renewal of the rosette.
Decor ideas & plant combinations
Its burgundy foliage warms up a corner of green plants and pairs well with purple or pinkish foliage.
- For a red and green duo, place it next to a Philodendron 'Imperial Green' — the same silhouette, with two colors that complement each other.
- To extend the purple tones, pair it with a Dracaena marginata 'Magenta' — its slender purple-edged leaves add height and echo the color of the petioles.
- To dress up the base, add a Calathea Medallion — its patterned leaves with purple undersides tie in with the philodendron's burgundy color.
- To enhance the pot, choose the white Elho Vibes Fold Ø22 cm decorative pot — its faceted white finish highlights the dark foliage.
To balance a dark arrangement, add a plant with light foliage such as Aglaonema 'Stripes', whose silver stripes brighten the overall look.
Verdeia tips
- Move it closer to the light if it turns green: new leaves that are greener than red signal a lack of light. Move it toward a window, without direct sun, to restore its burgundy color.
- Turn the pot each month: a regular quarter-turn keeps the rosette symmetrical, as the leaves always orient themselves toward the light.
- Slow down in winter: space out waterings and stop fertilizing from October to March, as outlined in our 5 steps for indoor plants in winter.
