🌷 Lily-flowered tulips • 🎨 Mixed colours • 🌿 Slender 50 to 55 cm stems • 🌤️ Flowers from late April to May • 💐 Superb in bouquets • ☀️ Full sun • ❄️ Very hardy • 📏 Bulbs size 11/12
The 'Ballade' tulip mix brings together lily-flowered tulips with pointed petals that curve slightly outwards, giving each flower a slender silhouette shaped like a star-tipped cup. From late April to May, they open in mixed colours on 50 to 55 cm stems. They are European horticultural selections, from the 'Ballade' series of tulips.
Taller and later than most garden tulips, they extend the season in beds into May. Among our flower bulbs, they are the most graphic tulips, the ones that make the most elegant bouquets.
Which tulip should you choose?
Our tulips differ in the shape of their flowers — here is where the 'Ballade' mix fits in:
- 'Ballade' tulip mix (this plant) — lily-shaped flowers with pointed petals in mixed colours, 50 to 55 cm, late April to May. For a slender bed and elegant bouquets.
- 'Flaming Beauty' tulip — mix of flamed flowers in yellow, orange, white, red and purple, 35 to 50 cm, April to May. For a very colourful bed.
- Mixed double tulips — peony-shaped double flowers, in April-May. For round, generous blooms.
Planted next to earlier tulips, the 'Ballade' take over in May and extend the flowering of the bed by two to three weeks.
How many bulbs should you choose?
Tulips make the most impact planted in tight groups: allow about 40 bulbs per square metre, or 10 to 12 bulbs in a 30 cm diameter pot.
- 12 bulbs: one large pot on a balcony or terrace, or a group of about 0.3 m² in a bed.
- 24 bulbs: about 0.6 m², or two large pots.
- 48 bulbs: about 1.2 m², for a well-filled bed or a border along a path.
- 96 bulbs: about 2.4 m², for a large border or a cutting patch of tulips.
The bigger the pack, the lower the price per bulb: the 96-bulb pack works out at less than half the price per bulb of the 12-bulb pack.
Planting & location
Tulips are planted from October to December, once the soil has cooled, for flowers from late April to May.
- Position: full sun; in sunshine, the pointed petals open into a star.
- Depth: 15 cm, pointed end up.
- Spacing: 10 cm between bulbs in the ground, 3 to 5 cm in pots.
- Soil: well drained; add sand to heavy soil, as the bulb rots in waterlogged ground.
- Hardiness: down to -25 °C in the ground, no protection needed.
Sheltered from the prevailing wind, their long stems stay straight until the end of flowering.
Watering & care
In the ground, rain is enough. In pots, the key is a free-draining growing medium: water only when the compost is dry 2 cm down.
- Watering: low — at planting, then in pots when the compost is dry on the surface, especially while the buds are forming.
- Fertilizer: unnecessary in the ground; in pots, use a bulb fertilizer as the leaves emerge.
- Faded flowers: cut the flower off just below the head as soon as it drops its petals, leaving the stem and leaves.
- After flowering: let the foliage turn yellow where it is for six weeks; it rebuilds the bulb’s reserves.
In a pot, give it a quarter turn every week in spring: the stems stay straight instead of leaning towards the light.
Decorating ideas & plant pairings
Their slender silhouette adds height to a bed or a large pot, and lends itself to combinations of colours and textures with lower, rounder flowers.
- For a white carpet at their feet, plant Muscari 'White Magic' — its small white spikes flower in April and brighten the base of the stems.
- To keep the flowers coming, pair them with Narcissus 'Thalia' — its fragrant white flowers open in April, just before the tulips, at a similar height.
- For a May bouquet, cut a few stems of each colour: the pointed petals bring movement to the vase and go well with light foliage.
- For a patio version, plant 10 to 12 bulbs in the white Elho Greenville Round pot, Ø30 cm — the matt white sets off every colour in the mix without competing with any of them.
In a vase, cut the stems in the morning, when the bud is coloured but still closed: they then last a week and keep growing longer.
Verdeia tips
- Wait for the soil to cool: ideally plant from late October. In soil that is still warm, tulip bulbs are more prone to disease.
- Plant deep: at 15 cm, the long stems of the 'Ballade' are better anchored and stand up better to the wind.
- Count on their hardiness: they overwinter in the ground without protection down to -25 °C, which places them among the easiest cold-hardy plants to grow.

Will the plant look exactly like the photo?
The photos accurately represent the variety and the stated size. Since each plant is unique, slight differences in shape, foliage, or color may occur — and that’s part of their charm.
What are the delivery times and conditions?
Orders ship within 48 working hours, with tracked delivery in 2 to 5 working days via DPD. Shipping costs and the free-shipping threshold depend on your country — see our delivery page. You receive a tracking link as soon as your parcel leaves.
What should I do when my plant arrives?
Open your package as soon as you receive it and carefully remove the plant from its packaging. Let it acclimate for 24 hours in its new environment before watering. If it has been slightly stressed during transport, it will recover its shape after one or two days in the light.
What should I do if my plant arrives damaged?
Contact us within 48 hours with a photo of the issue. Our team will assess the situation and offer you the best solution: replacement, partial refund, or recovery advice.
